7 Small Ways to Feel More Like Yourself in the Middle of Mom Life

0 · Sep 7, 2026 · Leave a Comment

Some days, you realize it is nearly lunchtime and the coffee you made at 7 a.m. is still sitting on the counter.

By then, you may have found a missing shoe, signed a school form, wiped something sticky off the table, and added three things to the grocery list in your head. Meanwhile, you are still wearing whatever you grabbed first that morning.

That is how easily your own routines can get pushed aside. So much of mom life is about keeping everyone fed, dressed, organized, and where they need to be. Your interests and the little things you used to enjoy can slowly end up at the bottom of the list.

Getting some of that back does not require a new morning routine or hours of free time. Start with a few small changes that fit into the life you already have.

Ways to Feel More Like Yourself in the Middle of Mom Life

1. Wear Something You Actually Like

Getting dressed on a busy morning usually comes down to three questions: Is it clean? Is it comfortable? Can it handle whatever the kids spill on it?

Every now and then, ask what you actually want to wear, too.

Maybe that means pulling out a sweater in your favorite color instead of grabbing the closest sweatshirt. Or wearing the jeans that make you feel good, even though your plans only include school pickup and a grocery run.

There is no reason to save clothes you enjoy for a more interesting day.

If mornings tend to turn your closet into one more problem to solve, these creative closet hacks for stylish moms on the go offer a few ways to make getting dressed easier.

2. Bring Back One Morning Ritual

Think about something you used to enjoy in the morning before finding water bottles and reminding someone to put on socks became part of the routine.

Maybe you listened to music while getting ready. Maybe you actually sat down with your coffee.

You probably cannot recreate those slower mornings every day. But you might be able to rescue five minutes of one.

Put on music while making breakfast, drink your coffee before opening your messages, or spend a few minutes getting ready without trying to do three other things at once. For more ideas that work around a packed family schedule, Whipperberry has some self-care routines that fit into a busy life.

3. Put Something on the Calendar That Is Just Yours

Take a look at the family calendar. There might be a dentist appointment wedged between soccer practice and a school event, a birthday party on Saturday, and a reminder that somebody needs a costume by Friday.

And, of course, Tuesday is pajama day. Hopefully you remember before Tuesday morning.

Now find a spot for something you want to do.

It could be coffee with a friend, a class, an evening walk, or half an hour to read without being interrupted. Putting it on the calendar makes it less likely to disappear the moment something else comes up.

There is some evidence behind making time for leisure, too. Research has linked leisure activities with aspects of mental and physical well-being, especially when those activities involve social connection or mindfulness.

4. Stop Saving Your Favorite Things for Later

There is probably something in your home that you love but hardly ever use.

Maybe it is the Le Creuset dish you usually bring out when people come over, a favorite designer bag, or an expensive perfume you save for special occasions, like Baccarat Rouge 540.

Why not let some of those things into regular life?

Wear the earrings to lunch. Use the good plates for Wednesday dinner. If an elegant Cartier Panthère happens to be the watch sitting in your jewelry box, wear it with jeans and a sweater. Spray that favorite fragrance before the school run instead of waiting for date night.

Most days do not come with reservations, invitations, or a reason to dress up. They are still your days. Watches can be easy to treat this way, especially ones that feel too expensive or dressy for an ordinary day. The Cartier Panthère is often thought of as a jewelry-style watch, but that does not mean it has to wait for a formal outfit. If you already own a watch like this, wearing it more often is simply another way to enjoy something that might otherwise spend most of its time in a box.

5. Claim a Little Space at Home

Kids have an impressive ability to leave evidence of themselves in every room. There are crayons on the table, shoes by the door, artwork on the fridge, and somehow a toy always ends up exactly where you are about to put your foot.

A home with kids is supposed to look lived in. Still, it is nice to have a corner that reflects your taste, too.

It does not need a makeover. Put a stack of books beside your favorite chair. Bring home flowers for the kitchen table once in a while. Frame a print you have always liked.

Even keeping one favorite mug safely out of reach of the household mug thieves can count.

6. Do Something That Has No Practical Purpose

Adult hobbies have a strange habit of turning into projects.

You start baking for fun, then wonder whether you should perfect your sourdough. You pick up a camera and suddenly feel as though you should learn every setting. Before long, something that was supposed to be enjoyable has another goal attached to it.

Try keeping a hobby useless.

Read the mystery novel. Grow herbs because you like having them on the windowsill. Learn a song you loved years ago even if nobody else ever hears you play it.

Research into hobbies and well-being suggests that hobbies can offer relaxation, enjoyment, and social connection. But you do not need to turn your free time into another wellness assignment. Enjoying it is enough.

7. Leave a Few Minutes Empty

When ten unexpected free minutes appear, it is tempting to put them straight to work.

The dishwasher could be emptied. There is an email waiting for a reply. The birthday present you almost forgot still needs to be ordered.

Sometimes, leave the ten minutes alone.

Sit outside with your coffee or stay on the couch after the kids go to bed. Listen to a whole song without picking up your phone. You may be surprised by how unusual it feels to have a few minutes with nothing expected of you.

There will always be another small job waiting somewhere.

Make Room for the Person Behind “Mom”

Motherhood changes plenty. Your priorities shift, routines disappear, and things that once seemed important may not matter much anymore.

But there are also parts of you that did not disappear. Maybe you still love the same music. You miss seeing a certain friend. There is a half-finished book beside the bed or a hobby you keep thinking you will return to when life gets less busy.

Life may not get less busy anytime soon.

So wear the sweater now. Text the friend. Pick up the book again. Use the good dishes in the middle of the week.

You do not need to separate yourself from mom life to feel more like yourself within it.
