Pumpkin Halloween Decorations + The Jack O’ Lope

4 · Sep 1, 2015 · 5 Comments

Guys I’m so excited… We are heading into my favorite time of year!

AUTUMN!!

And with Autumn comes all kinds of fun decorating… Back-to-School, Fall, Apples, Pumpkins and Halloween to name a few. I am thrilled to be one of this year’s Michaels Makers and this months challenge is PUMPKINS.

00000_SO_0901_MIC_MAKERS_l

I’ve always loved pumpkin Halloween decorations and I decided to take kind of a silly route with my challenge and make my version of the Jack O’ Lope…

I thought it turned out fun! It was so easy to put together, I just gathered a few supplies at Michaels Craft Stores. Did you know that Michaels is carrying HALF pumpkins?! No more will we need to pull out the heat knife to try and cut our craft pumpkins in half. We can buy them that way now! Well played Michaels, you always know what we need.

I found this great chalk board at Michaels (I couldn’t find it online, but it is in stores) and thought it would be fun to add some antlers to my half pumpkin for a fun wall piece for my Halloween display, to make a Jack O’ Lope of sorts.

First, I seasoned my chalk board to give it that worn in look.

How to season a chalkboard

I crushed a little chalk and then rubbed it all over the board with a cloth or paper towel.

Season your chalkboard

That way it looks more like a used chalk board rather than a black sign.

Then I hot glued some antlers that I had hanging around onto the board…

Then, I glued the half pumpkin in place right on top of the antlers.

It fits perfect!

Next, I set-out to create a fun Halloween display to show-off my Jack O’Lope.

I grabbed some of Heidi Swapp Marquee Bats (sorry, they aren’t online but they are in-store) and spray painted them black with Krylon Chalkboard Spray Paint.

Then I added some paper wall bats that are also available in-store.

I added a Halloween printable that I created last year, I still LOVE it!

You can download it HERE.

To fill-out the scene, I added some more pumpkins to the drawer of my buffet…

I wrapped one with a pumpkin sleeve from the Martha Stewart Halloween collection at Michaels. They look really cool and are an easy way to dress-up any pumpkin.

Last but not least and made another set of large dice to use as decor this time. I just love how they fill-in the scene with a little more whimsy. These are super easy to make and are fun to have on hand for all kinds of things. I LOVE my new black set for Halloween!

All together, I think it makes a pretty fun scene for the season. My kiddos think it ‘s pretty cool anyway.

How do you like to decorate with pumpkins? Do you like to decorate for fall, or do you jump right into Halloween like we prefer to do?

Michaels is having a great sale on the crafting pumpkins this week, 40% off… Run and grab some quick before they disappear!

Kitchen Marquee Sign with Heidi Swapp

+ Kitchen Marquee Sign post brought to you by Michaels Craft Stores +

kitchen-marquee-sign-with-heidi-swapp-by-whipperberry

I am obsessed with marquee signs… I truly am.

It started with this post back in July of 2013, my Designer Marquee Letters.

designer-marquee-letters-by-whipperberry

Back in the day when marquee letters were rather elusive. Your options were to either pay a fortune for the real deal, or find a way to DIY a set of your own. I went the DIY route which was great, the sign still lives in my kitchen and I love it, however… it was a tad challenging, still expensive and quite frankly it still looked a little wonkey with all kinds of wiring to contend with.

The day that Heidi Swapp released her Marquee Love, was a DREAM! Seriously, I’m not sure if I’ve ever been that excited about a product release in a long time. It’s BRILLIANT! Truly, I’m always kind of excited to see what Heidi has up her sleeve. She is taking the crafting world by storm these days with not only her Marquee Letters but her Minc Foil Applicator is GENIUS as well. One of my favorite crafting tools right now!

Heidi is one of those individuals who is amazingly innovative but someone who is truly genuine. She’s everyone’s cheerleader. We have connected a bit over social media and had a chance to chat at SNAP this last year. She is one lady who I truly admire and look up to. She’s brilliant and a go getter. She’s one of those ladies who dreams up a crazy idea like the Minc and just MAKES IT HAPPEN! I love that!

I had a ball this week creating with my favorite Heidi Swapp Marquee Love letters to celebrate Michaels Big Brand Sale Starting Sunday, August 2nd.

 Kitchen Marquee Sign

I decided to take Heidi Swapp’s Marquee Love letters to the next level and add them to a wood sign, rather than just having them sit on a shelf. I have fallen in love with all kinds of fun typography signs for the kitchen floating around like this one from Gina of Shabby Creek Cottage

small-kitchen

BUT… I thought, how fun would it be to have a marquee element to it. Why not do a sign saying, “Kitchen is Now OPEN” with the OPEN in marquee letters showing that when the sign is alight, the kitchen is open, when it’s off, the kitchen is CLOSED. Fun, right! Here’s how to make it…

Materials Needed

  1. 24×24 plywood board
  2. 4 – 25 inch 1 1/2 x 1/2 inch boards for the frame
  3.  Heidi Swapp Marquee Love letters O,P,E,N
  4. Krylon Chalk Board Spray Paint
  5. White Chalk Paint – I used BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder
  6. Silhouette or Cricut cutting machine OR Stencil Letters
  7. Vinyl
  8. Scrap paper
  9. painters tape
  10. Hot glue
  11. Brad nails
  12. Glue dots

Directions

Gather your materials and prepare them to paint. I decided to use Krylon Black Chalkboard Paint because I love the deep black and the matte finish.

First, I spray painted my letters and the frame for the sign.

Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-9

Then I used BB Frösch Chalk Paint to white wash the sign base. I chose that technique rather than just straight paint because I still wanted to see the wood grain.

Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-8

To white wash your board, all you need to do is use watered-down chalk paint and then lightly wipe-off the paint to reveal the grain of the wood. This is a great way to add a little color, keep the wood look and it also dries really quick!

Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-5

Next, I cut my vinyl with my Silhouette CAMEO using the Bebas font. Love that font!

I laid down my vinyl and then taped the rest of the board with painters tape and some scrap paper to mask the rest of the board while I spray painted the letters.

Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-4

Once the paint was dry, I placed my marquee letters and drilled holes to feed the lights through. Now, keep in mind, you need to think through the pavement of the holes and how you are going to arrange the lights in the letters. You want the battery packs sitting on the bottom frame of the sign and you need to place the drilled holes accordingly.

Then, I assembled my marquee letters and hot glued them to the board.

Next, I hot glued the frame to the sign base and then secured it with some brad nails.

On the back of the board, I used a few glue dots to secure the battery packs for the letters to the back of the board.

And that was it… your Kitchen Marquee Sign is finished!

The cool thing it looks great with the lights ON or OFF!

Kitchen-is-now-open-Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-3

I found the cutest sign on The Diary of Dave’s Wife not to long ago…

Lunch-now-being-served

Of course had to make one of my own, I thought it look great placed right under my Kitchen is Now Open sign…

Kitchen-is-now-open-Heidi-Swapp-Marquee-Sign-from-WhipperBerry-4

How fun is that! I used some 3M Command Picture Hanging Strips that are velcro so I can easily interchange my breakfast, lunch & dinner signs for fun! LOVE IT!!

Don’t forget this next week is the perfect time to stock-up on all your favorite brands at Michaels Big Brand Sale!!

Affordable Style with Sauder Woodworking CO

+ This Affordable Style post brought to you by Sauder Woodworking Co. +

Sauder-Writing-Desk-11

From a very early age, I’ve been in love with design. Even as a little girl, I loved to flip through design magazines and look at beautiful homes. I especially LOVED being invited into a home that was well thought out and beautiful. You know the feeling… There are just some homes that take your breath away. The homeowner has taken the time to really curate a beautiful space.

You would think that in order to have a well designed and decorated home it would take a design budget large enough to feed a small third-world country for a day. It just isn’t so… It may seem like it, but I promise it’s not. I have been in multi-million dollar homes and in small 900 square foot apartments that just ooze great style. It truly doesn’t matter, you CAN create a beautiful, thoughtful space on any budget.

The key… just like with a great wardrobe, you want to have some solid, classic base pieces. For example, you always want to have a great basic black dress, classic white shirt and stylish slacks in your closet.  They are your basic pieces that are well made, they are always in style and they can be dressed-up or down with current trendy accessories.

The same goes for your home. No matter what your budget, you want to find your basic black dress in furniture form. Classic pieces that fit your taste that will last through the trends. You can dress them up with current colors or accessories that change each season. But all-in-all they are beautiful and timeless.

Think that is out of your reach? Think again…

Even with a small budget, you can find timeless pieces that can create a beautiful, thoughtful home. For example, This beautiful writing desk from Sauder Woodworking CO…

Sauder-Writing-Desk-5

This Carson Forge Writing Desk from Sauder is the perfect example of your basic black dress when it comes to home furnishings.  It has a timeless elegance about it and dresses-up easily to create a stunning corner of your home. It’s made by  Sauder Woodworking CO, a company that has been building furniture for 80 years. They have a solid track record of creating stylish AND affordable home furnishings for even the smallest budget. Sauder goes hand-in-hand with affordable style.

They have a commitment to manufacture as much of their product here in the United States as they can, in a most Earth-friendly way as possible…  All very admirable qualities in a company these days.

The best part about this piece… The price! It’s only $204.99. What a great and affordable way to add some style without breaking the bank!

Sauder-Writing-Desk-10

The desk is nice and compact, but finished on every side so it’s easy to add to any room. It has a pencil drawer and a slide-out hinged laptop or keyboard shelf.

Sauder-Writing-Desk-8

I paired mine with a vintage typewriter chair that I found here in Lincoln from Nodding Goat Home at Simply Bungalow,  some fun pendant lights from Antique Farmhouse and the Be Awesome Today sign is from Barn Owl Primitives.

BUT that’s how I would style it. Want to see some other bloggers who have joined me in a design challenge with this very same piece? Visit Sauder’s Put Together Lookbook…

You can find all kinds of inspiration there! You can also follow Sauder on Pinterest, Twitter & Facebook to find even more inspiration. How would you style a little black dress like this writing desk?

BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder

BB-Frösch-Chalk-Paint-Powder-Round

If you have been following me on Instagram for the last little bit, you’ve seen some of the fun furniture projects that I’ve been working on using BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder.

WhipperBerry-furniture-makeovers

What is BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder? It is the most amazing paint product that I have found… EVER!! This is seriously a game changer in the paint world.

We know we all love to use Chalk Paint for all kinds of projects, whether they are furniture projects for the house or simple craft projects. The issue is that boutique chalk paints have a PREMIUM price tag which is typically too expensive for most consumers.  Another issue… You have a limited selection of colors. You only have at most, 35 colors to choose from. What if you want the chalk paint look but they don’t have the color that you would like… You are out of luck.

You can try to create your own chalk paint with common items like Plaster of Paris, but you have several issues there as well. First off… Plaster of Paris is meant to harden. So… whatever paint you mix, within a few hours turns to rock. Second, did you know that some components in Plaster of Paris are on the list of the hazardous chemicals? You can actually burn yourself using the stuff!!

I’ve teamed up with a good friend of mine who has developed the perfect product… Chalk Paint Powder.

bbfrosch-Chalk-Paint-Powder

You add this powder to any flat latex paint and turn it into chalk paint for a fraction of the cost. Plus you can mix up smaller batches if you want, cutting your cost even further. For example…

WhipperBerry-BB-Frosch-Makeovers-15

I painted this dresser in three hours, start to finish, with an 8 oz. sample pot of paint from Home Depot. The dresser was purchased on Craig’s list for $16, the sample pot was $2.95 at Home Depot, the BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder cost $2.50 and the soft wax used to finish the project was less than $1.00. Total… I was able to refinish this dresser for $6.45!!

Total cost for the dresser… $22.45!!

That’s INCREDIBLE!!!

This desk…

WhipperBerry-BB-Frosch-Makeovers-4

Again, it took a sample pot of  Behr flat paint $2.95 at Home Depot, $2.50 for BB Frösch Chalk Paint Powder less than $1.00 for wax and gold spray paint. New hardware was $12.00 and the cost of the desk from a garage sale… $10.00.

Total for the entire piece (including the desk)… $28.45!!

Like I said before… GAME CHANGER!!

BB-Frosch-Chalk-Paint-Powder

How fun is this!?!?
