Creative DIY Projects to Refresh Your Home Decor

0 · Oct 9, 2026 · Leave a Comment

You know when you walk into a room and it just feels a little… flat? Like the walls are too quiet, or that thrifted side table is finally showing its scratches. I get it. The good news is you don’t need a huge budget or a design degree to fix it. Usually, just one lazy Saturday and a few craft supplies are enough to completely shift the energy in a space.

Maybe you’re in a rental where painting is totally off-limits, or you’re just staring at an awkward, empty hallway. No matter what you’re working with, spending a little time on a small project is such a comforting way to make a house feel like home. Here are a few of my favorite, easy ways to jump in.

DIY Projects

Breathe New Life into Thrifted Finds

I will fully admit, I love a good thrift store hunt. There is something special about taking a forgotten wooden tray, a dated picture frame, or a wobbly side table and giving it a second chance.

You do not need fancy equipment for this. A can of chalky finish paint, a little sandpaper, and some new hardware are all it takes. I recently picked up a plain wooden serving tray for a few dollars. After a light sanding and two coats of soft white paint, it now sits on my kitchen counter holding coffee mugs and fresh lemons. It looks like it came from a high-end boutique, but it cost me less than ten dollars.

Custom Printable Wall Art

Store-bought art gets expensive fast. A single framed print at a big box store can easily run you fifty dollars or more, and you are stuck with whatever they are stocking that season. Printable wall art flips the script entirely.

The best part is you get to pick exactly what goes on your wall. The design, the size, everything. I usually print mine at home, but a local print shop works great for bigger pieces. Either way, it costs so much less than store-bought art.

Can’t find a free design you actually like? I’ve made my own in about ten minutes using free online tools. My one tip: keep it simple. Two or three colors max, and give the design some breathing room. Grab a cheap thrifted frame, pop the print inside, and suddenly it looks like something out of a magazine.

A Relaxing Paint by the Numbers Set

When we think of creative decor, we often assume we have to design everything from scratch. But sometimes, the best projects are the ones that guide your hand. That is exactly why I have fallen in love with using a paint by the numbers set for home decor.

It is not just for kids on a rainy afternoon. These kits are a wonderfully mindful way to unwind after a long week, and the end result is a genuine piece of custom art.

I recently finished a muted botanical design and framed it in a simple black floater frame. It now hangs in my study, and guests always assume I painted it myself. It adds a pop of color and personality to the room, and the process of painting it was surprisingly therapeutic.

DIY Tiered Display Bowls

You’ve probably noticed tiered trays popping up everywhere lately, and there’s a good reason for that. They are wonderfully practical for corralling everyday clutter while still making it look pretty. I love using mine on the kitchen counter to hold lemons and garlic, but they work just as well on a desk to tame stray pens and paperclips.

The store-bought versions can be surprisingly expensive, but making your own is actually quite simple. Just hunt down two or three rustic clay pots or wooden bowls in slightly different sizes at your local craft shop.

Stack them up and secure them with a sturdy wooden candle holder and some heavy-duty craft adhesive. A quick coat of matte paint unifies the whole thing. It ends up looking completely custom, and keeps your counters tidy, too.

Simple Sewn Envelope Pillow Covers

If you’re itching to change up a room’s vibe but absolutely dread painting, just swap out the pillow covers. I always reach for envelope-style covers when I want a quick refresh. They are such a forgiving sewing project, mostly because you completely skip the nightmare of installing zippers or messing with buttonholes.

You can literally whip one up in fifteen minutes. For a standard 16×16 pillow, you just cut one square for the front and two slightly smaller overlapping pieces for the back.

Hem those inner back edges, pin them over the front piece with the pretty sides facing each other, and just sew straight around the outside. Flip it right-side out, give the corners a good poke, and stuff your pillow insert inside. They look so crisp and store-bought, plus you can just throw them in the wash when life gets messy.

Start Small and Make It Yours

When I first started doing DIY decor, I used to stress over every little mistake. But I’ve realized the best pieces usually have a few quirks. Making things by hand just brings a quiet little pause to my otherwise chaotic week.

Don’t worry about making it perfect. Just pick one small thing to work on, grab your supplies, and see where it goes. Maybe you’re hanging up a printed art piece, gluing together a tiered tray, or just kicking back with a paint by the numbers set. Those little changes are what make a house actually feel like yours. At the end of the day, your home is just a reflection of the life you’re living, and putting a piece of yourself into it is the best part.
