When I first started using Cricut Design Space, I looked at that tool and really could not figure out what the point was. It turned into my little wallflower that stood away from my favorite tools begging to be invited to dance as well. One day, just by happenstance, I started to play around with the Slice Tool and boy, I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

I’ve put together a video tutorial on three different ways to effectively use the Slice Tool when working in Cricut Design Space. It’s going to totally change the way you create your graphics for use with your favorite Cricut cutting machine. The video is about 14 minutes long but, it is well worth the time if you’re wanting to stretch your design muscles in Design Space.

Since my Mom loves flowers, I thought the Anna Griffin floral patterns in the Francesca sampler would be perfect. I’ve been crushing on Anna Griffin’s work for years so, this was a natural fit for me as I started to design this Garden Girl bag.

The design is pretty simple, it’s a flower that I found in the Cricut Design Space and then sliced the words into the flower and added a couple of leaves. But, no worries… I’ve got you covered. You can click on the link below, in the project supplies section, it will open this project up for you to use in Cricut Design Space.

Instructions

Now, that you’ve seen the video, here is the step by step instructions.

  1. Open the project in Cricut Design Space and click on the customize button. You may need to resize the design in order to fit your canvas bag.
  2. Cut the design on your Cricut machine following the steps that Cricut Design Space will walk you through. Make sure that when working with any iron-on material you need to MIRROR YOUR IMAGE and CUT ON THE WRONG SIDE of the iron-on vinyl.
  3. Weed your iron-on material. To “weed” vinyl or iron-on material means that you remove any iron-on material that you don’t want on your bag. For this design, you’ll want to remove the outside of the flower and leaves, then remove the letters from the inside of the flower.
  4. Pre-heat your Cricut EasyPress to 340˚ and set-up your EasyPress Mat.
  5. Place the canvas bag on the EasyPress Mat and prepare the surface by pre-heating the space where you are going to add the design for 15 seconds. This allows for greater adhesion for the Patterned Iron-On.
  6. Place your flower down on the surface of your bag then, slide the leaves under the flower and place them where you would like them. I trimmed the bottom of the leaves a bit since they were going to be covered by the flower.
  7. Remove the flower, cover the leaves with the Protective Iron-On Sheet and press the leaves at 340˚ for 30 seconds and gently pressing down on the EasyPress. First, on one side and then an additional 30 seconds on the other side.
  8. Remove the Iron-On Protective Sheet and then, peel back the clear protective film on the leaves.
  9. Place the flower over the leaves. Replace the Cricut Iron-On Protective Sheet and press again, like before. 30 seconds on one side, then 30 more on the other side.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes and then remove the protective film.
  11. At this point, you can decide whether you want to fill in the letters with Sharpie. I wanted my Garden Girl to stand out a little more so I decided to fill them in. You may have selected a Patterned Iron-On where the words standout just fine and you won’t need to fill them in. This is your call basically.

With that, your bag is finished and ready to gift to your favorite Garden Girl!

I have always been a wreath girl at heart. After years of watching Martha Stewart on her old shows in the 1990’s (the best ones, if you ask me) I have always wanted to push myself to either find or create the best wreaths for my front door. For me, it’s a must… You MUST always greet every visitor at your door with a cheerful hello in the form of a beautiful wreath. With the beginning of the new season, I thought a DIY Boho Spring Wreath was definitely in order. Come learn how to make one of your own!

What is a Boho Spring Wreath

Spring is all about new beginnings. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays and getting gifts for everyone else, it’s time to treat yourself (and your space!) With bright florals and fresh projects, Michaels helps you MAKE all things spring!

What is Boho really? Short for “bohemian,” boho as a style is most closely associated with the hippies of the ‘60s and ‘70s, but the truth is it borrows from so many fashion subcultures and time periods that almost any outfit or decor can be “boho” if you style it right. To me, this wreath is a little mother earth paired with a hint of glam and that’s why it qualifies as Boho to me. I love the elements of nature, the sticks tied together with jute and then dressed with greenery that will last throughout the whole year. All topped with a cheerful HELLO in gold that adds that hint of glam like the cherry on top.

The supplies are rather simple which goes along with the theme of simplicity for this wreath. I found everything at Michaels which makes gathering supplies super easy.

Boho Spring Wreath Instructions

Here is a quick video tutorial showing you how to make this easy spring wreath…

  1. Trim the twigs to your desired length.
  2. Place in a triangle and wire all three sides together. Trim ends if needed.
  3. Cut the fern leaves from the stem and wire them to the twigs in the left-hand corner.
  4. Cut the Zebra Bush leaves from the stem and hot glue them to the fern leaves.
  5. Cut the air plants from the stem and glue them in place.
  6. Wrap the two bottom corners with wired twine.
  7. Create hanger with wired twine at the top of the triangle then, wrap the tip of the triangle with the wired twine to hold the hanger in place.
  8. Use the gold wire to wire the hello to the wreath.
  9. Hang your wreath on your door or wall and test to see if any adjustments need to be made.
  10. Enjoy!

Farmhouse Decor Makeover with Americana Matte Metallic Paint

I know that you guys are right here with me… You have some old, outdated decor pieces that really play nice with today’s trends but, you still kind of like them. You like them enough to not get rid of them but, they need a little bit love. I have several pieces like that. I’ve had some wood magazine boxes that have been sitting around collecting dust so, when DecoArt introduced their AMERICANA DECOR® MATTE METALLICS™ PAINT I knew that I had a great way to update them a bit to fit my farmhouse/industrial style a little better.

The Paint Makes the Project

It’s really true, the paint makes the project. I was a little wary of this project because I don’t typically lean towards the metallic side of the spectrum when it comes to painting. Don’t get me wrong, I do love a little glam but, typically not in my paint projects. But, this paint is magical! It’s a MATTE METALLIC and it’s fabulous. I actually worked the paint so that it looked like a brushed metal and I love it.

I decided to use the magazine boxes as more of a decorative spot for my shelves and decided to add some white stripes along with the Matte Metallic paint for more of a farmhouse look.

Supplies for Farmhouse Decor Makeover

Makeover old decor with the @decoart AMERICANA DECOR® MATTE METALLICS™ PAINT

Instructions for Matte Metallic Paint Makeover

  1. Clean your decor item.
  2. Paint your base coat. When you’re painting with the Chalky Finish you want to paint in a cross-hatch pattern which helps give the nice chalky finish.
  3. Once you’ve finished with the white Chalky Finish coat, let it dry to the touch.
  4. Lightly sand your piece to smooth out the paint surface.
  5. Apply your Frog Tape in the stripe pattern that you like.
  6. To create a perfect line, cover the edges of the tape with the base white paint.
  7. Then, using the America Decor Matte Metallic paint, cover the surface of the decor piece.
  8. Let the paint sit for a few minutes and then carefully pull the tape. It’s better to pull the tape when the paint is still slightly wet. That way you avoid possibly pulling dry paint up as well.
Now you’re all set with your new decor piece! I really like the look of the brushed metal that the Matte Metallic pant gives, it looks great! I’ve used my updated magazine boxes to store the collections of my favorite magazines that I like to keep around for inspiration. What would you like to update? {Recipe} Peaches and Cream Panna Cotta

Is there anything more lovely than a good, juicy, ripe peach? Quite honestly, I think that is one of my favorite summertime LOVES!!  I have fond memories of my dad cutting up a peach and putting it in a bowl with a little pinch of sugar and a splash of cream… heaven in a bowl. Well, I’ve kicked it up a notch. Another love of mine is Peaches and Cream Panna Cotta. What is this you ask? (This post has been updated, it was originally posted August 24, 2011)

What is Panna Cotta

The first time I had Panna Cotta was at an Italian Resturant in Colorado where I grew up. I  don’t know what inspired me to try something new but, I’m so glad that I did! When it arrived at the table it was a smooth, glass-surfaced dessert with a raspberry sauce on one side topped with berries and whipped cream. It was so intriguing. It didn’t look like pudding or custard, nor did it look like gelatin. I tasted my first bite and was hooked instantly. It was cool dessert, perfect for those hot summer nights. It’s creamy and sweet and pairs nicely with chocolate, caramel, or a whole host of fruits.  It’s basically an eggless custard made with decadent cream and gelatin and it’s divine. Panna Cotta is the perfect blank canvas to create the perfect dessert with. We like to top it off with some fresh summer peaches and that’s it. No need for whipped cream or anything else. The Summer peaches are perfect with the divine Panna Cotta!

Peaches and Cream Panna Cotta

Yield 6-8 servings

Peaches + Cream is truly Summer heaven. Team them up with the creamy eggless custard called Panna Cotta and you’ll have a real Summer crowd pleaser!

Place the cream, milk and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Split and scrape the vanilla seeds from the bean. Add both the seeds and the pod to the milk. When the milk mixture begins to simmer, shut off the heat and whisk in the creme fraiche.

You will then need to strain the mixture and return to the pot. Add the gelatin and whisk until dissolved. Pour the mixture into 8 (1 cup) ramekins and set aside to come to room temperature. Cover and place in the refrigerator to firm up for at least 3 hours preferably overnight.

Now for the peaches…

Cut them into small bite size pieces and place in a small sauce pan along with the sugar and nutmeg.  Cook over medium heat for about five minutes until sugar is dissolved and peaches have cooked down a bit, but not too much.  Let cool and then top the panna cotta with the cooled peach mixture. Sit back and ENJOY the best peaches and cream you’ll ever have!
