Friday Flair

0 · Oct 13, 2011 · 14 Comments

It's time for Friday Flair!!  But… Before we start the party, I wanted to remind everyone about our Swap a Smile Auction.  Today is the last day to place any bids and I'm telling ya there are some pretty cool deals to be had.  Please open your heart and take a second to check out what some amazing bloggers from around Blogland have offered for a great cause, Operation Smile.

So far we have raised enough money for 4 1/2 smiles!  We are almost to our goal of 5 bright and shiny new smiles for some very deserving children. It costs $240 for one new smile so… that's really pennies for what it can do for a child's life.  We have heard from many of you who either have children who have been born with this condition or who WERE born with a clft lip and or a cleft palate and truly you have touched out hearts.

Please, please, please visit our auction and take your last opportunity to bid on some amazing projects that were hand made by some of your favorite creative bloggers.  Seriously right now the highest bid is on a SOAP DISPENSER!!  I know that the Handmade Quilt that has been donated by Kari from Ucreate, the Halloween Pillow Covers by Jen from Tatertots and Jell-o or the Spooky Halloween Vinyl Frame by Shelley from House of Smiths should beat that!!  There are so many great projects you have to come on over and check them out!!

Cranberry Apple Drunkin’ Dressing… a Dressing with a Little Kick

2 · Oct 12, 2011 · 12 Comments

Let’s Talk Turkey

When it comes to Thanksgiving one of my all time favorite side dishes for the big day is my Cranberry Apple Drunkin’ Dressing.  It is in my opinion the perfect dressing for Turkey!!

The inspiration for this recipe comes from one of my favorite restaurants here in Las Vegas, Table 34. Chef Wes created the most amazing dressing and serves it with his lovely roasted chicken.  The minute I tried it I fell in love… it was heaven on a plate.  One night while I was there, I had to take the opportunity to ask him what makes his dressing so special.  The secret… you get your cranberries DRUNK before you put them in the dressing!!!  Seriously, you soak the dried cranberries in brandy for an hour our so before you add them to your dressing.  So, last year for Thanksgiving I thought I would come up with my version of Table 34’s dressing and here is what I came up with…

Swap a Smile {Giveback Event}

600 wide banner

We as women and mothers delight in the joy of raising our families despite some of the frustrations and effort it takes.  We delight in hearing and seeing our children grow and learn, and we strive to put their needs before our own.  Their heartaches are OUR heartaches and their joy is OUR joy.  So imagine if you had a child who was beautiful and happy in everyway…but who did not have a beautiful outer physical smile to match the beauty of their inner smile?

Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can’t afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.  Whereas, most of us are blessed to be living in Nations and countries where we have access to basic services and healthcare for our families which is there to help us help our children to lead healthy and normal lives.

We feel that women everywhere have the same basic tendencies to nurture and care for their families and feel that automatically connects us as social beings.  A group of us wanted to be able to use this crafting/DIY community and find some way to give back to others, to be involved in something that was bigger than us and our blogs, and do something to actually make a difference in the lives of women and children who are just like us.

Operation Smile is a charity organization healing children’s smiles, one operation at a time.

Operation Smile, is more than a charity organization. They are a mobilized force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate.  Each operation costs approximately $240.

With this is mind, we created “Swap A Smile” to raise funds through an online auction of DIY and Craft Bloggers’ past projects.  We would love for you to join us in our efforts to give back to others who need help. It only takes a little bit to go a long way. Our goal is to be able to give at least 5 children new smiles and help them to live the life they weren’t meant to live.
