How to Personalize Your Yeti Cup • Yeti Tumbler Design Ideas

I’ve become a little obsessed with my Yeti cup to help me do just that. I’m also a HUGE believer in making everything look as fabulous as possible. Yeti has these WHITE Yeti 30 oz. Tumblers and I ran out and grabbed a few. I knew that it would look amazing when I dressed it up with a stylish design cut out of Cricut Premium Outdoor vinyl. I took off to Michaels to grab some of my favorite vinyl and set to work. Let me show you how to personalize your Yeti.

This is so fun! Obviously, you can do this with any type of cup, I’m just a huge Yeti fan. I’m also a huge Cricut Fan so if you don’t have one, grab a friend who does and offer to make her a cup as well!

Instructions to Get Cricut Vinyl on Your Yeti

First, you’ll need to open Cricut Design Space with the link provided above to access my design. If you are working with the same type of tumbler all you need to do is click the MAKE IT button on the bottom right of the screen and follow the steps on your machine.

If you are using a different size cup, you’ll need to measure your cup and decide what size to make your vinyl and then resize it in Design Space. Click on the CUSTOMIZE button also in the bottom right. Size the design to fit your cup and then follow the directions in Design Space to cut the design. Keep in mind… Either way, You’ll have to pay 99¢ to have access to the cute face in Cricut Design Space.

Next, you’ll need to apply your vinyl on your tumbler by following these HOW TO APPLY VINYL instructions that I posted not too long ago. Once you apply your vinyl, you’re all set to look FABULOUS this summer carrying around your white Yeti that has been customized just for you!

5 Ways to Beat the Heat this Summer at Home

I will have to admit, I’m a baby when it comes to heat. I LOVE summer but I hate to be hot. It’s partly because I have a condition (among others) called Hyperhidrosis that causes excesses sweating. Some people have excessive sweating under their arms or on their hands and feet. They literally have to change clothes several times a day like “Southern Charm” star Cameran Eubanks. My dermatologist says that she has met people who’s hands literally drip sweat. I can’t even imagine… Oh, wait, I can! I came across something recently that gave me a new angle on what others go through — you can check this out if you want a deeper look. That’s why coming up with ways to beat the heat has always been really important to me.

My Sweaty Story

My particular condition is on my FACE! It could be forty below and if I’m nervous or moving, my face will be dripping sweat. Yea, it’s AWESOME! I’ve tried botox and medication to help but, so far nothing has worked. My Mom says that even as a newborn, I would have little beads of sweat on my nose when I was upset. I don’t know if you know this but, newborns don’t sweat on their nose. So, this issue has been a long and somewhat embarrassing one. Not to mention the fact that being embarrassed makes it even worse. Ugh!

Summer is even worse. When others are merely “glowing” (as my mother would say) I’m dripping buckets. With a history like that, I’ve become quite adept at making sure I stay as cool as possible so that I too, can enjoy the Summer.

How to Beat the Heat at Home

Throughout the course of my life, I’ve lived in homes with and without air conditioning so, I understand the issues on both sides of the fence. I’ve also lived in high heat index areas like Las Vegas and lower heat index areas like Denver. Again, I’ve experienced heat on both sides of the spectrum. Here are a few tips and tricks that I’ve worked out to help beat the heat at home during the hotter months, apart from making sure Istay hydrated all day.

Make sure, if you have air conditioning, that you have it serviced once a year by a trained professional. This has saved us a countless number of times especially when we were living in Las Vegas. It’s more than just spraying off the dirt and grime that has accumulated over the winter months. Find someone who knows their stuff, one who can detect even the tiniest of issues so that you can tackle them before they become huge issues. When we lived in Vegas, we had a fan blade in one of our units that was a little off kilter and basically chewed through some very important cables causing us to have to totally replace our unit at a rather large expense. Not only did we have to pay to replace a rather new unit, we were in the depths of Summer and had to fork over for a hotel room for a couple of days. With small children, there was no way we could stay in our house when it was over 110˚ each day. That was an expensive lesson learned. photo credit • unknown
Find all of those hidden heat vents into your home. For example, many people work to Winterize their homes, why not “Summerize” your home?
1. Check all of your windows and doors to see if you have sneaky little heat vents coming into your home that you weren’t even aware of.
2. If you have a gas fireplace, turn of your pilot light for the summer. You would be surprised at how much heat even that little pilot light will give off. They are easy to relight when the weather turns colder.
3. Limit the amount of time when cooking indoors. Summer is the perfect time to work on your outdoor cooking skills. Think outside of the box… My Mom would fry chicken at least once a summer when I was growing up. We lived in an unairconditioned house and she would take her electric skillet out on the back porch and fry our chicken out there so as to not heat up the house. With all of our fabulous electric gadgets these days, air fryers, Instant Pots, Instant Pot Sous Vide, electric skillets and so much more. Take those electric appliances outdoors, in a safe spot, and work your Summer cooking magic without heating up the house.
Take advantage of those cooler mornings and evenings. If you live in a climate that has those glorious cooler mornings and evenings like in Colorado, take advantage of those times of the day. Open your windows in the morning and cool down the house. Make sure to close them before the day starts to heat-up.photo credit • unknown
Balance out your home with a portable air conditioner. Every house we’ve ever owned, our bedroom has been the hottest room in the house. If we would turn up our air so that our bedroom felt comfortable, the rest of the house was like a meat locker. If we kept the house at a normal temperature our room would be nice and toasty every night. No Bueno in my world, I can’t sleep if I am hot. We had looked at adding an additional air conditioning unit to our current house, one for upstairs and one for down and that is SUPER expensive. That involves relocated ductwork and all kinds of invasive modifications to the home. That’s not really in the cards right now so, my husband suggested we get one of those window units for our bedroom. That quite honestly made my design and style loving heart cry a little. Those window units look like a parasite living on the side of your house. They work great, these just look terrible. Then we were introduced to a portable air conditioner that we really come to love from Honeywell. This portable air conditioner is fabulous! We are able to keep our house at a manageable temperature and then we can cool our room separately at night when we need it the most. It’s fantastic and it is saving us on the cost of cooling our home. It’s far more aesthetically pleasing inside and outside the home. It does have a vent that vents outside but it’s easy to conceal when in use. The vent is more noticeable inside than it is outside. I love that my home still has the nice character without being marred by a window air conditioning unit. This particular unit comes with a remote, the fan has three settings (low, medium & high), it has a timer, it’s on casters so it easy to move and store and it has a dehumidifier. If you’re in a dry climate (which we are not) you can use an air cooler which is awesome!! These little portable gems can be taken outside to cool your outdoor Summer gatherings. Wouldn’t be heaven, outside in the summer enjoying the sun and yet, still cool. This great machine uses a combination of water and air movement to keep your area cool. Whether inside or outside, this is another great way to keep your home cool in the warmer months.

Let’s Flamingle Sign • Sign Making 101

What do you call a group of flamingos? A Flamboyance of course! With a name like that, they are asking to Flamingle this Summer for all kinds of gatherings! I have been trying to find some inspiration for my new front porch sign for this summer and I finally stumbled up a fun flamingo themed saying that I thought was perfect for a summer sign created with my Cricut Maker & Easy Press, Let’s Flamingle Sign!

Sign Making 101

I love making signs… It’s is really one of my favorite ways to decorate my home. I especially love using the Cricut Iron-On Lite when I am making Canvas signs. Becuase of the nature of canvas, vinyl just doesn’t work but, Iron-On Lite works like a DREAM. It makes it look like your sign has been screen printed which I just love.

Now that Cricut has come up with the Easy Press and the Easy Press Mat, heat-transfer sign making is easier than ever! I grab the inexpensive canvas bulk packages at Michaels when they go on sale and have a whole slew of canvas sizes and shapes available when inspiration strikes. Sometimes I frame them, sometimes I don’t. It’s really the mood that strikes me that day. These kinds of sign take minutes to make and really don’t involve a whole lot of mess (i.e. painting, sanding, etc.) and time-consuming work. Can I say it one more time… I LOVE them!!

Sign Making Supplies

Alright, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty… Here’s what you’ll need to make your Let’s Flamingle Sign.

16x 20 canvas – or you can select the size that you want, just make sure that you size the design correctly before you cut your Iron-On Lite.
Cricut Iron-On Lite
Cricut Easy Press or an iron
Cricut Easy Press Mat or a towel
Cricut Iron-On Protective Sheet or a light cotton towel
Let’s Flamingle Sign design in Cricut Design Space

Directions for Let’s Flamingle Sign

This one, my friends, is basically… CUT, PRESS & CELEBRATE!

First, you’ll need to click on the Let’s Flamingle Sign link in the supplies list and open the project in Cricut Design Space. It is currently sized for a 16 x 20 canvas but, you can totally select your own size canvas. You will just need to make sure that your graphics are sized appropriately.

Next, you need to cut your Iron-On Lite according to the directions in Design Space. MAKE SURE TO MIRROR YOUR IMAGE! You will find a checkbox on the left-hand side of the cutting review screen, make sure that it is turned on so that your image will cut correctly. Anytime you use an iron-on type material, you will always need to mirror it before cutting the design.

Once your design is cut, you’ll need to weed the excess Iron-On Lite. That means you’ll need to remove the Iron-On Lite that doesn’t belong on your canvas.

Now that your Iron-On Lite is prepped and ready to go, you’ll need to preheat your Easy Press or your iron.

Cricut Easy Press Basic Guidelines

Work on a hard surface like a countertop or sturdy table. An ironing board will not work.
Protect your surface. You need to use the Cricut Easy Press Mat or a towel underneath the item that you are pressing to protect the countertop or table.
Use the heat settings suggested by the smart guys at Cricut. For this project, this is the suggested settings.

340°F / 171°C

Pre-heat Canvas: 5 sec

Apply Iron-On Lite: 30 sec

Heat for an additional 15 seconds on the back of the canvas with the protective lining still in place

Warm Peel: remove liner while the design is warm to the touch, but not hot. This is when removing the liner will be easiest. If you allow it to cool completely, it will just take a little more effort to remove the liner.

* If you are using a standard iron, heat settings and times will be different.
Protect the surface of your Iron-On Lite along with the heat plate of the Easy Press by using the Iron-On Protective Sheet or light cotton tea towel.

With this canvas, the Easy Press Mat worked perfectly to not only protect my surface but to also provide a platform for the canvas. The frame of the canvas makes using the Easy Press a little bit of a challenge. You can not press on a canvas without a platform underneath, the canvas will stretch and your sign will be ruined. Becuase of the height of the canvas frame, the Easy Press Mat worked great and I didn’t need to add additional books underneath to create a firm surface.

When the Iron-On Lite is cool to the touch, carefully remove the protective film.

With that, your new sign is FINISHED!!

How easy was that! If you have the right tools, this sign is a cinch to make. I’m loving my new front porch sign and I can’t wait to “FLAMINGLE” with my friends this Summer!

When I first started using Cricut Design Space, I looked at that tool and really could not figure out what the point was. It turned into my little wallflower that stood away from my favorite tools begging to be invited to dance as well. One day, just by happenstance, I started to play around with the Slice Tool and boy, I’ve been a huge fan ever since.

I’ve put together a video tutorial on three different ways to effectively use the Slice Tool when working in Cricut Design Space. It’s going to totally change the way you create your graphics for use with your favorite Cricut cutting machine. The video is about 14 minutes long but, it is well worth the time if you’re wanting to stretch your design muscles in Design Space.

The design is pretty simple, it’s a flower that I found in the Cricut Design Space and then sliced the words into the flower and added a couple of leaves. But, no worries… I’ve got you covered. You can click on the link below, in the project supplies section, it will open this project up for you to use in Cricut Design Space.

Instructions

Now, that you’ve seen the video, here is the step by step instructions.

Open the project in Cricut Design Space and click on the customize button. You may need to resize the design in order to fit your canvas bag.
Cut the design on your Cricut machine following the steps that Cricut Design Space will walk you through. Make sure that when working with any iron-on material you need to MIRROR YOUR IMAGE and CUT ON THE WRONG SIDE of the iron-on vinyl.
Weed your iron-on material. To “weed” vinyl or iron-on material means that you remove any iron-on material that you don’t want on your bag. For this design, you’ll want to remove the outside of the flower and leaves, then remove the letters from the inside of the flower.
Pre-heat your Cricut EasyPress to 340˚ and set-up your EasyPress Mat.
Place the canvas bag on the EasyPress Mat and prepare the surface by pre-heating the space where you are going to add the design for 15 seconds. This allows for greater adhesion for the Patterned Iron-On.
Place your flower down on the surface of your bag then, slide the leaves under the flower and place them where you would like them. I trimmed the bottom of the leaves a bit since they were going to be covered by the flower.
Remove the flower, cover the leaves with the Protective Iron-On Sheet and press the leaves at 340˚ for 30 seconds and gently pressing down on the EasyPress. First, on one side and then an additional 30 seconds on the other side.
Remove the Iron-On Protective Sheet and then, peel back the clear protective film on the leaves.
Place the flower over the leaves. Replace the Cricut Iron-On Protective Sheet and press again, like before. 30 seconds on one side, then 30 more on the other side.
Let cool for a few minutes and then remove the protective film.
At this point, you can decide whether you want to fill in the letters with Sharpie. I wanted my Garden Girl to stand out a little more so I decided to fill them in. You may have selected a Patterned Iron-On where the words standout just fine and you won’t need to fill them in. This is your call basically.

With that, your bag is finished and ready to gift to your favorite Garden Girl!
