A few weeks ago I participated in I Heart Nap Time's Crazy Christmas Crafter event with my Candy Cane Wreath. Just in case you missed it… here it is!
Hello all you Crazy Christmas Crafters! I'm Heather from WhipperBerry and I am thrilled to come and hang out with you guys here at I Heart Naptime today. I LOVE the Holidays and I especially love all of the fun Christmas crafting that can be had this time of year, It was so fun to bust out the red and white the other day to work on this fun Candy Cane Wreath…
A few weeks ago Shelley from House of Smiths invited me over to her place to share a fun Halloween wreath that I had created that I aptly named The Candy Corn Wreath. While I was working on that post I thought it would also be a GREAT candy cane wreath for Christmas too, and… it would be perfect for Jamielyn's Crazy Christmas Crafters!! It is soooo easy to make, anyone can do it. Plus it really makes a statement. Here is what you will need…
~ One foam wreath form {mine is about 13 inches across}
~1/2 yard of muslin
~ 3/4 yard of red canvas fabric
~3/4 yard of white canvas fabric
~ 250 straight pins
~ Black ribbon
To begin, tear your muslin into long 4 inch wide strips and then wrap your foam wreath form…
Secure the muslin to the foam form with straight pins. Next, you need to cut your canvas into ROUGHLY 4×4 inch squares. Don't worry about exact measurements pretty close works perfect for this project.
Once you have your squares cut, start with the red and take one square and fold in half and then fold in half again. Take a straight pin and pin it to the wreath form like this…
Continue to fill in a row of red, working them close together to give it a nice full effect. Wimpy wreaths look sad, so don't be stingy!! Alternate one row of red followed by two rows of white until the entire wreath is filled in. Tie your black ribbon into a bow and affix the bow to the wreath with a couple of pins. Voila, you're finished!!
Isn't it fun? I LOVE this wreath and I especially love working with canvas fabric it really stands up to whatever you ask it to do. Here are some more fun Christmas ideas from WhipperBerry…
How to make your own Homemade Vanilla with a tutorial on how to bottle it for a fun neighbor gift. Another great project for those cold winter days, Ribbon Trees. These are super fun. Here is another fantastic neighbor gift… Hot Chocolate on a Stick. I promise, you will be the talk of the neighborhood!!

This wreath is SO VERY LOVELY, and with your tutorial it’s something I think even I could reproduce. Thanks for the instructions!

This is gorgeous! Thanks for the great tutorial.
Would you mind sharing where you got your canvas?
Heather says
Thanks so much. I bought the canvas at Hobby Lobby, but I’ve seen it at JoAnn’s as well. It’s a pretty standard fabric that should be easy to find.

I’ve looked for canvas fabric online and there seem to be different variations of it–do you know which one would work the best? I know there’s “duck” and “bottomweight”…do you have any idea which one is better? Or do you remember about how much per yard the fabric cost (that might help me get an idea)? Thanks!

This looks fabulous!!! I found my project for the Thanksgiving holiday 🙂 Thanks for sharing – and I also pinned it on Pinterest 🙂

I love this wreath & thank you so much for the tutorial! Unfortunately I couldnt find the canvas & bought a cotton fabric & its not sturdy enough to hold the beautiful shape that your canvas does. Im not giving up though…checking different stores today for canvas. Must make this wreath 🙂

Oh bummer! I hope you can find some. Where do you live?

quick question… I am making this wreath.. are you folding the squares in half (rectangle, then another half to make a smaller square) or making the square diagonally into triangle then smaller triangle? and how close did you pin them:) I can’t make mine look as good as yours:)
Heather says
Jessica-
I fold the fabric into a rectangle and then into a square and I pin them pretty close together in order to have it fill out nicely. Let me know how it goes!

Looking at your pictures, your folds totally don’t look like a rectangle folded into a square…am I missing something? Your’s kinda look like fancy triangles. I LOOOOOOOOOVE this wreath, I think it’s one of the cutest ones I’ve seen online! I made one today and I love mine, but your folds just look different than mine.
Jaime says
Is the fold to make the rectangle a little “off set” and then off set again to make the square? Your’s just POPS, I love it! Thanks for sharing your talents with all of us!

I have completely started over 4 times and I just cannot getine to lOok like your picture. Can you give a little more detail to how the fabric is pinned on the form? Nothing I do gives the same effect. Mine seem to lay down at an angle and the red and white look much closer together. Help!!

My mom has one like this (she made it many years ago), but just an off white…..she took a screwdriver and pushed the fabric into the styrofoam wreath. It looks great and has for YEARS. I may try mine that way….but with the candy cane effect!!

Thanks for the tutorial! I’m going to make one in a solid color for a baby shower and this is so helpful!

I LOVE this wreath but cannot figure out how you are pinning this. are you doing one row all the way around first or are you doing a solid color all the way up then moving to the next color? so are you pinning vertical or horizontal.
thanks

Heather, This wreath is gorgeous! I’ve just come over from Twitter and delighted I’ve stopped by…the black bow is sleek making the perfect contrast to the festive candy cane striations. Brava!

First of all, this wreath is amazing. I have been searching for months for something like this that is somewhat simple to make, so thank you. Is there any way you could provide a few more details for this project, like the previous questions on here, I seem to have the same? I would greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance for your time. GREAT JOB!!!!!

I have plans to make this wreath using red, white and blue fabric with a yellow ribbon. As an Army wife, I see tons of “support the troops” type decorations and etc, but there is something about the wreath that sets it apart! I can’t wait to get it started!

Hi, I want to thank you for your lovely images and tutorial which served as inspiration for one of my students in my Creativity Workshop, I’m posting it in my blog, hope you can click on over and take a look at her interpretation and effort at http://wp.me/p1O652-Gl…thanks again and happy holidays, Alexandra

So I found this wreath and am obsessed!!! I want to make one soon so if it comes out good I can make more for Xmas but like the others I noticed the picture definitely doesn't look like a square but some sort of triangle – I'm not crafty in the least so if I don't know exactly how to do it it won't come out right! Any help you could offer would be so appreciated:) thanks!!!!!

where can I buy this already made?
