The New Silhouette Cameo Test Drive

0 · Oct 25, 2011 · 19 Comments

It's no secret that I am a huge fan of the Silhouette personal electronic cutting tool. I've used  Sophie, my Silhouette SD to make my Portable Growth Chart and a fun Weathered Wood Sign for my friend Sarah.  I've made temporary tattoos, etched glass and have made all kinds of fun t-shirts for my kiddos.  All kinds of fun projects have come from my sweet Sophie.  Well… today I want to introduce Camille my new CAMEO to you guys!!

The Cameo is the next generation Silhouette electronic cutting tool and my friends… it was LOVE at first sight!  The Cameo has a much larger cutting capacity with a full 12 inch wide and 10 foot long cutting range. Did you hear that? You can make a vinyl sign that is TEN FEET LONG without having to piece it together!!!  This is a new day in the personal cutting tool world.

Silhouette was kind enough to send one of their new Cameo's to my studio to take for a test drive.  It didn't take long for Camille {yes, that's what she has been named} and I to become fast friends. I decided I wanted to work on a project that I have had on the back burner for awhile.  I had this fun lamp that I new could use a little bit of love and I thought some vinyl inside and out would turn this simple and boring lamp into a lamp that could truly make a statement…

Did you notice the little secret the lamp has?  We all know, a clever girl ALWAYS leaves something to be discovered and this fun lamp is no different.  When you turn the lamp on you will see that the trendy chevron pattern continues on the shade as well…

By day, she's a simple girl with an understated elegance.  By night the party girl comes out ready to make her mark on the world!!  Isn't it fun? This project would have been a bit of a challenge with my old silhouette, but it's a breeze with the new Cameo with the much larger cutting range.

The updated Silhouette software easily converts to the Cameo if you already have a Silhouette SD. From the minute you plug it in you are good to go. With my $10.00 download card that comes with your new Cameo, I found a fun chevron pattern that I thought would be perfect for the lamp.  I manipulated it in the software and prepared it to cut on the Cameo within just a few minutes…

Once the vinyl was cut I used the transfer tape included in the Cameo vinyl starter kit, to transfer the vinyl onto the lamp…

One of my new favorite tools… the Silhouette Scrapper tool.  I've used all kinds of scrapper tools and this one is FANTASTIC!! I may have to order a few more of these, I LOVED it!!

I then transferred the vinyl onto the inside of the lamp shade…

Repeat until you have completed your design. Voila… you now have a super STYLISH new lamp with a little secret!

I also have a little secret… Silhouette is offering all of you guys the first opportunity to get your hands on this AMAZING new machine at a special price before the BIG holiday rush!!

All you have to do is go to the Cameo site and enter WHIPPER at check out to receive the new Cameo and your choice of starter kits for $299. That's a $40.00 savings! Just think of all of the fun gifts you could make with this fun machine.

I have a feeling Santa is going to be doing a little bit of early Christmas shopping today!!

      Oh Nancy!
You would die and go to heaven if you could see what the Cameo could do vs. the Cricut. Have Santa run out and get one for you!!

I told my hubby about the Cameo when I first heard about them and said that’s what I wanted for Christmas. Maybe he can do his shopping NOW!

You got one!!! I’m so jealous! I’m going to have to break the news gently to my SD. I’m no longer in love with it. Must get a cameo! 🙂

The cuts look so much cleaner than what my cricut can do. I don’t see the Cameo faries visiting soon but I can dream. 🙂

Love the project, especially the lampshade! Is the lampshade fabric? Hard to apply without putting creases or bumps in the shade? Would love one of these, but would settle for the old one!

I have the new Cameo and I love Silhouette (I ordered the ORIGINAL Silhouette way back when the debut in Feb of 2007!). I got this one because I really wanted the extra long cutting space but I have no clue how to do it. And the manual is kind of a joke since it just replicates what the Silhouette does but does not go into the new functions of the Cameo. So any advice on how to get my groove on with extra long vinyl cutouts. Did you by chance try and do one long cut so you did not have to piece it?
