{Tutorial} Chalkboard Menu

5 · Nov 11, 2010 · 94 Comments

UPDATE //

I have since redone my chalkboard menu now that I have a Silhouette and this is what the final menu now looks like…

Sooooo much better!! Below you will find the orininal tutorial on how to make a chalkboard menu for your family.

The other day I was reading Jen’s post from Tatertots & Jell-o about her lovely Chalkboard Chargers and it got me thinking.

thanksgiving plate

I have a beautiful black armoire in my kitchen that was screaming for some chalkboard treatment.

WB 010

Can’t you just see it?  A lovely menu board on the side!  So I got to work.  First I washed the side to prep it for the paint.  I then taped off the section that was going to be my work space.

WB 012

Now we are ready to paint!

WB 021

I used Rust-Oleum black chalkboard paint, and a small smooth surface roller. I painted three coats and let it cure for three days.

WB 027

On the third day I cut vinyl lettering on my Cricut, (I used the Doodletype cartridge) and applied it to the surface before I seasoned the chalkboard.

WB 058

Next, and very important, you must season your new chalkboard.  To do that, all you need to do is take a piece of chalk, lay it on it’s side, and gently color the entire surface of the board.

WB 062

Erase the chalk and voila, your new chalkboard is ready to use.

I just painted the top of our chest freezer with chalkboard paint to label everything inside…and I have leftover paint. This is a great idea. I just have to find something to paint. This my husband will care if I paint over a window? (Kidding, of course)

I LOVE THIS!!!  This will be my next project!  FYI – I know it sounds silly, but if you want to clean your chalkboard to "like new" surface, use Coke (or Diet Coke)!  I am not kidding, put it on a washcloth and wipe! When it dries it won't be sticky or anything BUT CLEAN!  This is my favorite cleaning secret… just had to share 🙂

    HI Heather,

I loved this chalkboard idea on Pinterest and got all the supplies that I could find. The space I have is significantly smaller than yours and my Michael’s only had spray paint chalk board paint. The lady at the store said it would work fine. Now my only problem is the vinyl lettering. I love the look of it, but don’t have a silhouette or a cricut. What would you recommend. Thanks for posting such a great DIY!

Not all holiday gifts need to be ooey gooey sweet. Savory holiday gifts are just as lovely, sometimes even more so. I personally have been off sugar for 3 months now and I’m really nervous for the holiday season to arrive. Having the house fill up with sweets is NOT what I’m wishing for this Christmas. I would LOVE to get one of these Ball® Sharing Jar soup mixes as a gift. Not only are they soothing to the soul, but they are also good for you as well. - WhipperBerry @ballcanning #soupinajar #printabletags #souprecipe

Soup Mix Sharing Jars

This year, I’m working on all kinds of fun gifts for the Holidays that will look spectacular gifted inside of a jar. One of my favorites is the White Chocolate Ginger Scone Mix in a jar. It’s really easy to put together a whole bunch of these gifts and really not expensive at all. It’s always a bonus to save a little money during the holidays. @ballcanning #giftsinajar #neighborgifts #teachergifts #sconeinajar

White Chocolate Ginger Scone Mix In A Jar

As much as we hate to admit it, cold and flu season is on its way. There is nothing more miserable than one of those lousy winter colds. What’s almost just as bad is watching someone you care for dealing with a cold or, Heaven forbid, the flu! I’m always looking for ways to help cheer them up and let them know that we love them and hope for their better health. That’s when I came up with this idea for a Cold and Flu Rescue Kit to share with those loved ones that are suffering. • WhipperBerry

Not to knock commercially prepared applesauce, but when you have the opportunity to enjoy homemade applesauce, you will know the difference. It’s sweet and tangy with the perfect texture. Not to mention the fact that it harmonizes well with many different notes on your palette AND, it’s super easy to make! #applesauce #applesaucerecipe #homemadeapplesauce

I was recently introduced to a simple Roasted Garlic and Roma tomato sauce recipe from Ball® Fresh Preserving that I have been dying to try. I knew it was going to be a GREAT base for my favorite Israeli Shakshuka dish and boy was I right. Come learn how to make this fabulous sauce for your family.

  • I know it’s been quite some time since I’ve jumped on here but... I wanted to stop by to wish you all a Merry Christmas. I hope your holiday was full of love & laughter. Here’s to a much brighter New Year! ♥️
  • Home school sanity... I sit and knit with my little guy as we do his school work together. Keeps my frustration level at a much more manageable level 🤪 I’m so grateful that @knitandpaperandscissors has their shop online and ships! #takethatcovid19 #knittersofinstagram • Yarn - @brooklyntweed & @shibuiknits • Pattern - my own creation.
  • The kiddos were out jumping in the trampoline and there were a few snowflakes floating down so naturally soup was perfect for our dinner menu. .
We made Creamy Italian Sausage & Potato soup from @sara_ourbestbites & @kate_ourbestbites book • 400 Calories or Less with Our Best Bites. Sara & Kate’s book that they released back in 2015.

I’m very picky about books that I purchase, especially cookbooks. Sadly, I very rarely use them. I typically don’t have time to comb through them. Now, we have time! This will become the great cookbook challenge. What are some of your most loved cookbooks? Join us for #thegreatcookbookchallenge #thegreatpause
  • I’ve decided that during this #thegreatpause family dinner was going to become our daily adventure. This week the whole family picked a recipe from @sara_ourbestbites & @kate_ourbestbites book • 400 Calories or Less with Our Best Bites. Sara & Kate’s book that they released back in 2015.

Dinner tonight • Smoky Citrus 🍊 Pork Tacos with Apple-Cabbage Slaw. It was super tasty! I added mango because I love mango and it made the tacos extra scrumptious. I also cooked the pork in my @instantpotofficial rather than a slow cooker. I browned the pork first and then set it on pressure cook for 40 minutes. .

  • Happy Easter!! I’m so grateful that I have a Savior who loves me and knows me by name. A Savior who meets me where I am, as I am, but... He doesn’t intend to leave me that way. I try to #hearhim each and every day. However, it takes renewed effort every single day. I love him & I KNOW he loves you too. ♥️ #happyeaster
