DIY Polka Dot Denim

1 · Jun 25, 2013 · 7 Comments

DIY Polka Dot Denim Jeans // Here is our last Creative Team post for this month. I'm thrilled to introduce Haley from Life is Sweet! Haley has been a long time WhipperBerry friend from back when WhipperBerry was the new kid on the block. She has always been so supportive and a wonderful friend. Haley may not know this but she is a real example to me… She is such a wonderful mother and a positive example that has a gift for lifting others and making them feel special. Haley has amazing style and shares fun projects and recipes peppered in a blog about her beautiful family and the lessons she learns in this daily journey we call life & parenthood!

Hello WhipperBerry friends! I'm still on cloud 9 to be able to share here with the rest of the lovely ladies on the WhipperBerry Creative Team…thank you Heather! Today I'll be sharing a tutorial involving one of my favorite patterns: polka dots. They can be fun and casual, classy and bold. I've seen polka dotted pants here and there for a little while now, and I love them! Recently I found a pair of white denim pants with black polka dots that I couldn't help but gush over, sadly the price tag put a stop to that train rather quick. So I made them happen with a pair of pants I already owned! And they're my new favorite pair of jeans. Do you like polka dots? If so, give this a try!

– Denim (or any kind of pants or skirt really…needs to be washed at least once prior to painting)
– Fabric paint (I love the Tulip brand…can be found at most craft stores and even Walmart)
– Pencil to mark the dots
– Stamp/Eraser of a pencil to stamp the dots (or something that is the right size of dot you're wanting)
– Paper, cut in a diamond-shape for the stencil (mine had a long cross-section of 3 inches, and a short cross-section of 2 inches)

STEP 1:
You'll want to set the diamond stencil on the denim and mark all four corners with small dots. Then move the diamond, matching up one of the sides with two of the dots, and then mark the remaining two corners. And repeat…over and over.
TIP: Do your best to match them up, but don't stress about having them be exactly in alignment. 🙂 That is why I chose to do a diamond as opposed to a square, I think it hides imperfections better.

STEP 2:
Lay your pants on a flat surface. With your eraser (or other tool for painting the dots) dab a small amount of fabric paint and then lightly press it onto denim over your pencil marks. Repeat for each dot.
TIP: You may need to dap/press twice if the dot needs to be darker/more solid, just be sure not to have too much paint on the eraser, you can always mark it again, but you can't make an already-painted mark smaller.

STEP 3:
Let the one side dry (a couple hours should be good, but lightly touch the last dot you painted to be sure the paint isn't wet) and then flip over to mark and paint the other side (Steps 1 and 2). Let fully dry…then have fun wearing them out on the town!

My Favorite Camera Bags for Women // the Jeanne Oliver Mia Bag

0 · Jun 25, 2013 · 4 Comments

Jeanne Oliver Mia Camera Bag Review // I'm super excited to share one of my favorite finds with you guys today. A couple of years ago, I bought a new camera and with a new camera… I needed a new bag. First I googled "camera bags for women" and found a few bags, but nothing really hit the spot. Then I hit the Twitterverse and asked if anyone knew of some great, stylish camera bags that I should check out. Within just a few minutes, someone (I wish I could remember who) messaged me back with an amazing (new to me) find… The amazing Jeanne Oliver and her stunning bags!

Jeanne Oliver Camera Bag

My Twitter friend showed me the now retired camera bag that I've been using for over a year now.

d4fff8d4ef06adff8df315d405c7261d

This bag is not only my camera bag, I've used it as a purse, diaper bag, conference bag and carry-on. I LOVE this bag!! Recently Jeanne launched her new line of bags and with this new launch she has introduced a new camera bag called the Mia Bag. From the minute I saw the new bag on Instagram, I fell head over heels.

Jeanne Oliver Mia Bag

Isn't it just divine? The fabric, the colors, the workmanship… I just love it all! Here, I'll give you a quick tour!

WhipperBerry's favorite Camera Bag

Here's the inside. I have one of my cameras in one of the padded pockets. Keep in mind, this is a Canon Rebel so it's the standard, non-professional sized camera and it fits nicely in that pocket. If I were to put my Canon 5D Mark II in the bag, it would fit in the main compartment and have two padded spaces for extra lenses or an external flash. But, with the smaller camera I can also fit my wallet, my iPad, a notebook AND my Macbook Pro along with other smaller items.

Inside the Jeanne Oliver Mia Camera Bag

The bag is fully padded and has two padded pockets along with a side zipper pocket perfect for keys, makeup and other small items. It has a cell phone pocket as well as a smaller pocket perfect for items like memory cards and such. This is the perfect purse / camera bag!!

Jeanne Oliver Mia Camera Bag Magnetic Closure

The fabric is a heavy duty upholstery fabric that is easy to wipe clean and holds up to a lot of use. The front flap secures with a magnetic closure which I love. I hate fussy closures on bags.

Jeanne Oliver Camera Bag Strap

The bags construction is superb and is up to any challenge you have to throw at it. The strap is sturdy and comfortable to wear.

Jeanne Oliver Label

I just love Jeanne's tag inside the bag, it's just so darn pretty!

Jeanne Oliver Mia Camera Bag Flower

AND, the handmade fabric flower on the front flap!! I just adore this detail. I love that my bag does not scream CAMERA BAG. That it's stylish and looks one of a kind. Now that I have two of Jeanne's camera bags (I also have one of her ruffled totes that I just LOVE) I can honestly say… They are by far my favorite camera bags!

You should check out the Jeanne Oliver Designs Site… she is one extremely talent lady who has her hand in many different creative pots these days. She designs bags and has two more in this summer's collection along with a handful of other items for sale.

Jeanne is also an amazing artist and photographer and she also teaches some amazing classes through her Jeanne Oliver Creative Network. This site is FULL of talented friends who have a passion for their work and love to share their talents along with what they have learned along their creative journey. It's an amazing site, you should check it out. All in all, I am a HUGE Jeanne Oliver fan and just had to share one of my loves with you guys!

Paracord and Vintage Scarf Ring Necklace

0 · Jun 24, 2013 · 4 Comments

Paracord Necklace // I'm thrilled to show off another couple of members of the the WhipperBerry Creative Team... Shannon & Jen from Eat.Sleep.Make!  Shannon and Jen have a fabulous team blog that is full of all kinds of creative DIY projects, fun fashion ideas and tasty treats. I'm super excited to have them as part of the team!!

Hey new friends!  I'm Shannon from the blogging duo over at Eat. Sleep. Make.  My sis-in-law, Jen, and I, like pretty much every craft blogger out there, are consumed with the "Hey, I can make that" mentality.  Sharing that obsession led us to start our little blog space together and now we are constantly fueling each others' creative fires.

When Heather asked us to be part of the WhipperBerry Creative Team, I think my exact response (to Jen) was, "Duh, of course we'll do it!"  We are excited beyond words at this opportunity to make new friends and challenge ourselves.

One of the things you'll learn about the two of us over at Eat. Sleep. Make. is that we love going to estate sales.  (We did a whole series about our strategies here.)  So, naturally, many many projects come from our compulsive shopping.  Today, I'm showing you how to make a necklace using para cord from the hardware store and a vintage scarf ring that I got for 25 cents at an estate sale. Yay!

As you can see, my cord got a little tangled.  It took me a good 15 minutes to even find the ends to begin untangling it.

For my necklace I used 6 strands that were 6' long each, folded in half, with a tie around the middle.  That gives 12 – 36" strands to braid.

I braided 3 groups of 4 strands to get a thick, sturdy braid.  Once the braid is complete, tie some cord around the end and use a hot glue gun to secure the ends together.

Next, slide your scarf ring on.

The hard part is fixing the 2 ends together.  I used the tie that held the looped ends together and joined the 2 ends.  Use hot glue to secure any pieces you think may come loose.

Slide the scarf ring over the joint to conceal it.  I made sure it wouldn't move by putting some glue inside the ring, then wrapping 5 loops of cord on either side of the ring.

I'm so happy with how this turned out… and even more happy about how many outfits it goes with! You can also make this using copper piping from the hardware store if you don't have a vintage scarf ring!  Use the elbow joint pipes to get some crazy architecture in the necklace.

Come on over to Eat. Sleep. Make. and check out some of our other projects that we've done.  Here's a few to pique your interest!

Beef Bourguignon 101 with Le Creuset GIVEAWAY

112 · Jun 20, 2013 · 442 Comments

Le Creuset Sponsored Giveaway // As a LONG time fan of Julia Child and Ina Garten (the Barefoot Contessa), I have always wanted to make Beef Bourguignon, BUT… I've had to wait for the RIGHT pot before I tackled this beauty.

WhipperBerry's Beef Bourguinon

As any artist will tell you, your work is only as good as the tools in your bag. The same goes for when you are working in the kitchen. My grandparents were the first exposer I had to the foodie world. My grandfather was connoisseur of fine food and fine cookware. It was his kitchen where I was first introduced to Le Creuset. As a little girl, I was intrigued by the colors of these magical pots and pans that were all over my grandparent's kitchen. I knew when I grew up, I wanted to have the colorful pots in my kitchen. As I got older, and became more educated about cookware, I learned that Le Creuset was one of the finest cookware brands around. The cast iron coupled with the enamel make for some of the best cooking surfaces out there and again, I knew this was a tool I wanted in my kitchen tool box.

Le Creuset was founded in France in 1925. Although they have branched out into many different types of products the cast iron line is still produced in the same factory today…

AboutUS_image1With that history, it's no wonder Le Creuset is some of the most sought after cookware around the globe. They last from generation to generation, my family is still cooking with the  same cocottes (French ovens) today. Sadly the older generation of my family has yet to let go and pass them down to my generation their prized French Ovens just yet. No worries… the lovely folks at Le Creuset sent one of their famous French Ovens my way to take for a spin around the block. To say that I was over the moon excited is truly and understatement.

I knew with my love of Julia Child and Ina Garten, the way I needed to christen my new Cocotte was with a lovely Beef Bourguignon. It just had to be done.  I took a little bit from Julia's recipe along with Ina's recipe and added a little splash of WhipperBerry to it and came up with this gem of a recipe that my husband said, if he hadn't already married me… He would most certainly marry me again after that meal! Seriously, he thought he had died and gone to Heaven.

Beef Bourguignon Recipe

1 T olive oil

1/2 lb thick cut bacon

3 lbs of boneless beef short ribs cut into 2 inch chunks

salt & pepper

2 yellow onions

2 cloves of garlic

1/2 c Cognac

1 bottle of red wine like a Pinot Noir

2-3 c beef stock

1 T tomato paste

4-5 sprigs of fresh thyme or 1/2 t dried

2-3 bay leaves

3 T Worcestershire Sauce

3 T B-V Beef Broth and Sauce Concentrate

4 T unsalted butter (melted)

3 T all-purpose flour

1 lb frozen whole onions

1 lb fresh mushrooms

1-2 loaves of crusty french bread

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F.

In a large French Oven heat olive oil and add the bacon that has been cut into small pieces. Cook over medium heat for 10 minutes or until lightly brown. Remove bacon and reserve for later. If you have a lot of bacon grease, remove a bit saving a small layer to cook your beef in.

Fry bacon

Dry your beef with paper towels and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Over medium heat add small batches to your pot to brown on all sides. Make sure you don't over crowd the pot. This will lead to the beef steaming rather than browning and who wants yucky gray meat?  Not me! Remove the seared cubes and set aside.

brown the short ribs

Add the carrots (that have been peeled and cut into 2 inch pieces) along with the onions to the pot with 1 tablespoon of salt and 2 teaspoons of pepper and cook for 10-15 minutes stirring occasionally until the onions have started to brown.

burn off the alcohol

Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Next, carefully add the Cognac, stand back, and ignite with a match. This will burn off the alcohol. You can see in the photo above, a little bit of the flame. It's kind of cool!

NOTE // I don't drink alcohol, but I do cook with it. You can find small bottles of items like Cognac at your local liqueur store behind the counter, just ask the clerk. That way, if you are like me and don't drink it, you don't have to buy an entire expensive bottle.

Put the beef and the bacon back into the pot with all of the collected juices. Add the bottle of wine, plus enough beef broth to cover the stew. Add the tomato paste, Worcestershire Sauce, B-V, thyme & bay leaves. Bring to a simmer and then place in the 250 degree oven for 2 1/2 hours or until the meat is very tender.

add your herbs to the pot

Remove from the over and place on the stove and bring to a simmer. Combine 2 tablespoons of melted butter with the flour and add to the pot. This will thicken the stew. Add the frozen onions.

In a separate pan, add two tablespoons of butter and sauté the mushrooms until lightly browned. Add to the stew pot and let simmer for 15 more minutes. Season to taste.

Serve with a nice crusty french bread that has been lightly toasted in the oven. This recipe will serve a crowd of anywhere from 8-12.

WhipperBerry's Beef Bourguinon with Le Creuset

This recipe is amazing!! It's one of those recipes that you have to make at least once in your life, just to say that you follow in the grand tradition of Julia Child and Ina Garten. The lovely folks at Le Creuset would LOVE to help with that tradition as well and have offered one of you a chance to win a Le Creuset Cocoette (French Oven) just like mine!!!
