{Who I Am} Carolyn from Homework and Friday Flair

Who I am banner pink

Carolyn from Homework

Carolyn Headshot

I’m Carolyn from Homework and I am honored to be a part of the Whipperberry “Who I Am” event.

I’m fairly new to blogging and have only been at it for about 8 months. I’m a work-at-home marketing consultant and started blogging when my consulting work slowed down. I have always enjoyed art projects and crafting but didn’t have the time or an outlet for my projects.

Inspiration Pictures

What I find so incredibly inspiring about this adventure is the blogging community. From seasoned bloggers who are so generous about sharing information, providing advice or giving you a shout out on their blogs, to the blog readers who take the time to visit, follow or leave a comment.

I love blogging and creating the projects that I post about and sell in my Etsy shop. Every day is an inspiration – you blog hop and discover an amazing project or a beautiful photograph, you receive a wonderful comment on your own post or get featured somewhere. Even a brief twitter exchange can leave you smiling.

That’s “Who I Am”… in other words, a happy member of the blogging community.

Carolyn has been one of our loyal readers and who really stood out in our very first link party. Her work is aaaamazing… she can take something as simple as a block of wood and make it beautiful. She’s someone to watch out for!!

Now on to the party!!

It’s Friday Flair… show us what you have {Whipped-Up} this week!

Here are the sticky rules {you know rules are in place so that no one gets their feelings hurt or their eye poked out! So let’s play nice.}

  • Please link up only your own projects, and link to the specific post, not your blog home page. No Etsy shops or giveaways, please.

  • You must grab a WhipperBerry button and include it somewhere in the post you’re linking, or on your home page (a text link is great too).

  • Stay and mingle (remember, it’s a party!), and leave a couple comments for other guests!

  • I’m 5’11, a dog person and a chocolate lover.
  • I tried for years to have a baby and was blessed with two.
  • It takes five seconds of a sappy commercial to make me cry.
  • I won a design contest at a yearbook camp in high school which basically steered the course of my life. It gave me a direction into a career where I met my husband and friends that are like family to me.
  • I daydream about having a flat in London. I’ve been there four times and I just can’t get enough.
  • I love to sing in the car.
  • You don’t want to be around me when I haven’t gotten enough sleep.
  • I’m not athletic or outdoorsy. There I said it.
  • I’m an Army brat and moved eight times as a kid. Fiercely proud of my Dad’s service to our country.
  • I’m a movie lover. I read celebrity gossip magazines. I cherish my DVR.
  • I’m 38 and buy clothes at Forever 21.
  • I have zero patience with a slow computer. I can go from calm to wanting to throw things within seconds.
  • I love the creative freedom of blogging and having a design business. The more I do it, the more I want it to be a bigger part of my future. Connecting with like-minded people and other bloggers like Heather is the icing on the cake!

My dear sweet Catherine!  She is one of those people who I would love to be when I grow-up.  She has been such an inspiration and it has been so fun to get to know her better.  We have a lot in common my friend!!

By the way… I did say that the “Who I am” event was going to fun for the month of May.  I am amending that.  It has been so fun to get to know some of our favorite bloggers that I am going to extend it for a little while.  I still have so many more lovely people that I want to get to know!  If you’re new… here is a link to the post about this series.

{Tutorial} DIY Burlap Garland

6 · Jun 2, 2011 · 22 Comments

Last week I shared all about our Love is in the Details photo field trip with Jeanna Hayes Studios and Suzanne from She Paperie and I promised a quick tutorial on how to make this fantastic DIY burlap garland!

DIY Burlap Garland tutorial[8]

I’m telling ya… this was one of my all time favorite projects to date!!  It’s amazingly simple and absolutely STUNNING!

burlap

Here is what you will need…

  • Burlap – for this length which was about 12 feet I {get ready for this} used about 5 yards of burlap.
  • Heavy weight hemp twine
  • yarn needle
  • scissors

First you will need to cut your burlap.  Now… cutting burlap straight can be a bit tricky but thanks to Linda over at Craftaholics Anonymous I learned a nifty little trick.  You figure out where you would like to cut, and then pull that string out. This will then leave a perfect straight line for you to follow when you make your cut.

burlap2

Now, I made my strips 4 inches wide.  The beauty of this is you can make them as wide as you want.

Once you have everything cut you’ll need to measure your hemp twine to the length that you want for the garland. Thread your hemp twine through the large yarn needle and make a large knot at the end.

You’ll then make a very large basic stitch in the middle of the burlap strip from end to end…

burlap3

…gently push the burlap down to the knot. The burlap will naturally spin on the twine making a really neat Elizabethan collar effect…

burlap garland tutorial[7]

Just keep adding strips of burlap until your twine is full and then tie it off with a large knot.

You’re all done and now you have an amazing garland that will really turn heads at your next event!

Who I am……I had to reflect and think about who I really am. Finding me and who I am has been a journey. Circumstances in my life have shaped the woman I am today. For many years I have supported my husband through the highs and lows of countless years in Medical school and now Residency. While I attend to the children and home I have a tendency to over look myself. When I got more involved with the blogging world I believe that this is where I have found one of my passions. Creativity is in my soul and it makes me happy. It’s who I am. And being a part of this amazing community of women that get me, helps me to embrace who I am. Making me a better wife, mother, friend, and most importantly, me.

DJenkins2

I am a true and loyal friend.

I admire my husband.

I am an out-going person and talk a lot.

I am obsessed with hair. Love to do it and try new things.

I hate my toes.

My children are the reason I wake up in the morning.

I am a giver. Giving fills my soul.

I am deeply passionate in whatever I am working on.

I LOVE the color green.

I am not a big fan of change. But I’ve learned to roll with it.

I love to get all dolled up in heels and a dress.

I have an intense fear of dogs.

I don’t have an ounce of musical talent but music is a huge part of my life. Music speaks the words I can not say.

I want to be remembered.

Scrumptious Birthday Oreo Lollipops {Take-Two}

0 · Jun 1, 2011 · 7 Comments

I have to fully admit… I fell in LOVE with sweet Amy’s {from The Idea Room} Graduation Oreo Pops!!!  I couldn’t help but day dream about what I would do with that fun little treat.  I didn’t have to dream too long… My daughters birthday was last week and she requested Amy’s amazing Oreo Pops for her take to school treat.  We decided to change up the name a bit and call them Oreo Lollipops for a fresh take.  So, It’s take-two time…

Oreo Pops 009

For Amy’s tutorial on how to make them, click HERE.  The only thing I did a little different was that I used caramel apple sticks rather than popsicle sticks {because that’s what I had on hand.}  Also, after I placed the sticks in the Cakesters I put them in the freezer for several hours until they were frozen solid.  This is a critical step that if you skip you will have a muddy mess in your white chocolate!

WB 041

Em and I then packaged them up to get ready for her special day.  First, we stamped some glassine bags with a simple Happy Birthday Emily…

WB 047

Then we tied them with some Divine Twine from WhiskerGraphics.  Super Simple and totally stunning!!

WB 048

They were a huge hit!!  Thanks Amy for giving us such and inspiring treat!!  Now, what would YOU guys do with some Oreo Lollipops?
