Is Tempera Paint Washable?

28 · Aug 23, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Yes. Tempera paint is washable. However, the material the paint is on matters. You’ll need to read the rest of this post to learn how to clean tempera paint from different surfaces.

Any painting project can get messy. In spite of the best efforts to keep everything clean, sometimes accidents happen.

Fortunately, tempera paint is very easy to wash out of almost anything. Because it is water-soluble, soap and water work great for most paint spills and mishaps.

Here are a few methods to make paint clean-up easier for different circumstances:

How To Clean Tempera Paint From Paint Brushes

Cleaning your paintbrushes properly is so essential. It ensures that your brushes will last a long time. Washing tempera paint from your brushes is very easy, and doesn’t take very long at all.

Whenever you are ready to clean your brush, or just to change paint colors, rinse your brush thoroughly in a cup of clean water. Most of the paint will come out just by doing this.

To thoroughly clean your brushes, the first step is to wipe any excess paint off using a paper towel. After that, you can use a little dab of liquid dish soap on the bristles and gently rub it with your fingers to loosen the paint.

Then you swish your brush around in a cup of clean water; this should remove most, if not all, of the paint.

When the paint is removed, you can rinse your brush under cool water to remove any remaining soap that is in the bristles.

Smooth the bristles of the brush so that they are all in one direction. Let your newly clean paint brush dry flat, or hang up by the handle (bristles pointing down). Drying flat or hanging will keep the bristles nice and straight.

If the tempera paint has dried on your paintbrush bristles, the same method should work. However, it’s probably going to take a little more dish soap.

You can try to gently pick the bits of dried paint off the bristles before cleaning with the soap.

How To Wash Tempera Paint Out Of Clothes

Washing tempera paint out of clothes is fairly easy, but the longer the paint is on the fabric the more likely it is to stain.

If you get paint on your clothes and it is still wet, you can blot any excess paint with a paper towel, then launder the clothing in cold water right away.

Using cold water is important, as hot water might cause any stain to set more permanently in the fabric.

Also, let the clothing item air dry instead of putting it in the clothes dryer. If there is even a tiny bit of the stain left, heat from the dryer could set it in the fabric permanently.

If the paint has dried, or if there is a lingering stain after the clothing has been through the laundry, you still might be able to get it clean. If the paint is dry, try flaking as much of the dried paint off as possible. You can use a plastic knife or a spoon to do this.

Then, use a spray bottle with diluted vinegar (one part vinegar, 1.5 parts water) to soak the stained area. Let it set for 10 to 15 minutes, then blot (don’t scrub!) with a clean paper towel or rag. You can repeat this a couple of times until the stain is gone.

You can also use a commercial stain remover, such as Oxy-Clean, to get rid of the stain. Just be sure to blot the stained area; scrubbing at it could just rub the stain back into the fabric fibers.

How To Wash Tempera Paint Off Of Skin

Have you ever done a painting project and managed not to get paint on yourself? I don’t think I ever have! Fortunately, tempera paint easily washes off skin, even when it is dry.

Ordinary soap and water should wash away the paint with no problem. You can also use a bit of liquid dish detergent if hand soap doesn’t seem to be getting it all clean.

If you’ve got paint stains on or around your fingernails, a paste made from baking soda and water works great to clean it up.

Can You Wash Tempera Paint off of Wood?

Yes but it can be challenging. Tempera paint on wood will come off if you leave it outdoors long enough. If it’s inside you may need to take it outside to pressure wash it.

Scrubbing it can be a bit challenging but will help quite a bit as well.

How To Remove Tempera Paint From Glass Windows

Tempera paint is frequently used for temporary window signs or holiday artwork. Removing it takes a little bit of work, but it doesn’t have to be stressful.

To begin, you can use a plastic spatula or putty knife to gently scrape off as much of the dried tempera paint as possible.

Once you can’t scrape any more off the glass, you can wash it with a solution of one part white vinegar/one part warm water. Soak a soft cloth in the vinegar/water solution and scrub to loosen as much paint as possible.

You will probably need to rinse the cloth and repeat this several times.

If there are stubborn spots of paint that you can’t scrub away, blot the area with the vinegar/water solution and wait for 5 to 10 minutes. Then you can scrub it away with the cloth.

After the window is completely cleaned, let it dry thoroughly. Finally, clean it with some spray glass cleaner to get rid of any remaining residue.

How To Wash Tempera Paint Out Of Carpet

Hopefully, you never have to clean spilled or dripped tempera paint from your carpet. But if you do, it’s very similar to the method for cleaning paint from clothing.

If the paint is completely dry, use a spoon to try to scrape as much of the paint off of the carpet as possible. Tempera paint is very brittle when it dries, so you might be able to scrape most of it away. Vacuum the paint dust right away before finishing with the cleaning.

The best thing to use for cleaning paint out of carpet is a commercial stain-removing product like Oxy-Clean or Resolve.

Spray it over the stained area, wait 10 minutes or so, then blot (never scrub!) with a clean cloth. Use a clean portion of the cloth each time you blot, so you don’t transfer the cleaned-up paint back onto the carpet. Repeat this a few times until the stain is gone.

If you don’t have any commercial stain-removing spray, you can try a diluted white vinegar and water mixture, just like you would use to remove the stain from clothing.

After the stain is gone, use a clean towel to soak up any excess moisture. Once the area is completely dry, vacuum again so there are no tiny bits of dried paint left in the carpet fibers.

Tempera Paint vs. Acrylic Paint | What’s Makes Them Different?

10 · Aug 19, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Both tempera and acrylic paints are very popular for crafting and DIY home decor projects.

While there are many similarities between these two types of paint, there are also some significant differences. How do you decide which type of paint is the best for your project?

Let’s compare the features of both tempera and acrylic, so you can make an informed choice.

The Difference Between Tempera Paint and Acrylic Paint

The biggest difference between Tempera Paint and Acrylic Paint is how permanent they are. Tempera paint can was off and the Acrylic paint doesn’t.

Although both types of paint are popular, they are pretty different from each other in a number of ways.

Acrylic paint is made from pigment, acrylic polymer binders, and additives that act as preservatives. It’s usually sold in tubes or sometimes bottles and has a thick consistency.

It dries very quickly into an acrylic (plastic) layer that bonds permanently to almost any surface. The dry paint has a slightly shiny appearance and is resistant to water.

This paint is used by many fine artists instead of oil paint for canvas painting, as well as by crafters. Because it adheres so well on many surfaces, it’s one of the most versatile paints available.

Tempera paint is made from pigments, water, cellulose or corn starch binders, and additives that function as preservatives.

The ingredients in most tempera paints are non-toxic and allergen-free.

You can buy tempera paints in liquid, powdered pigment that you mix with water, or in the form of solid paint sticks you can draw or write with.

Like acrylic paint, tempera dries fairly quickly.

The dry finish isn’t shiny at all; it is a smooth matte appearance. Because tempera is water-based, it is limited as far as what surfaces it will adhere to.

Tempera paints require a porous surface, so anything shiny or water-resistant won’t allow the paint to stick.

Acrylic Paints: Pros and Cons

Here are some of the advantages of using acrylic paint:

  • Acrylic paint has a very fast drying time. Typically, acrylic paint will feel dry to the touch in about 15 minutes and will be fully dry in under an hour. This is a big advantage when you compare it to oil-based paints, which can take several days to fully dry. The fast drying time saves time if you’re in a hurry to finish a project.
  • Acrylic paint has bright, vibrant colors. The color you see on the label of your acrylic paint is going to look true to the actual paint color. The vibrancy of acrylic paints makes them ideal for mixing custom colors without the hue turning “muddy” and dull. Acrylic paint colors are very lightfast; they won’t fade over time. An acrylic painting should look just as vibrant years later as it did the day it was painted.
  • It’s easy to correct “mistakes” with acrylic paint. If you don’t like how your painted project looks, all is not lost! If your paint is still wet, you can wipe it away with a damp paper towel. If the acrylic paint has dried, you won’t be able to remove it, but it’s easy to paint over top of it with more acrylic paint. Acrylic paints are quite opaque, so the paint will cover the “mistake” you’re trying to correct without anything showing through.
  • Acrylic paint is durable and permanent. You won’t find another type of paint that can stick to just about any surface. It stands up well to moisture, frequent touching, and temperature changes. Once the paint has dried, the water evaporates and the dry paint becomes a plastic paint layer that is permanently adhered to the painted surface.
  • Acrylic paint is so versatile! Acrylic paint can be used in many ways to achieve different looks. You can use it “as is”, or apply it thickly for a built-up textured look (known as impasto). You can also thin it with a little water if you want it to be slightly more transparent. You can also add acrylic medium, which is an additive used to achieve different effects from your acrylic paints. Acrylic mediums will give you gel, matte, glossy, and glazed appearances.

There are, however, a few disadvantages when using acrylic paint. Here are a few of them that should be considered:

  • Acrylic paint dries very fast, which can be a disadvantage as much as an advantage. If you’re trying to blend colors on a canvas painting, sometimes the paint can start to dry before you’ve completed the blending. There are possible solutions to this problem. Additives are available that you can mix into acrylic paints to lengthen drying time, or you can mist water onto the painted surface so the paint will stay a little bit wet while blending.
  • Dried acrylic paint is difficult or (in some cases) impossible to clean. The durability of acrylic paint is definitely one of its main advantages, but once it has dried it’s not coming off of anything! You should avoid getting it on clothing, but it can be washed out of fabric if you catch it before the paint dries. You need to be sure to clean/rinse your brushes quickly before the paint dries on them.
  • There are a few surfaces that acrylic paint won’t stick well on. Anything that is shiny or completely smooth might be resistant to acrylic paint. Examples of this would be glass, metal, and very smooth plastic. The acrylic paint will stick, but it might peel off easily after drying. You can prevent this by either scuffing the surface lightly with sandpaper or by applying a light primer coat.

Tempera Paints: Pros and Cons

There are some advantages to using tempera paints. Here are a few:

  • Tempera paint is easy to use! It can be used right out of the bottle if you’ve bought it in liquid form. You probably won’t even need to stir it. If you have the powdered tempera pigment, you can mix a little bit of water with the powder until you get the consistency you like. It mixes very smoothly and easily. The tempera paint sticks are as easy to use as markers. You just take the cap off and start drawing!
  • Tempera paint dries quickly. Anything painted with tempera paint will feel dry in approximately 10 minutes and will be fully dry in another 10 or 15 minutes. This is nice if you don’t want to wait for a long time for your project to dry.
  • Tempera paint is the safest paint choice for children. All tempera paints are non-toxic and allergen-free. That’s part of the reason they are so popular for use in schools and preschools. Many finger paints are actually tempera paints with a slightly thicker consistency.
  • Tempera paints are perfect for temporary painting projects. If want to decorate windows with signs or holiday art, tempera paint is a good choice. Powdered tempera works best to paint on glass windows. You should mix just a small amount of water with the powdered tempera pigment so it is slightly thicker than usual. To clean your temporary art off the glass, soapy water should remove it easily.
  • Tempera paint colors are clean and bright. The bright, accurate colors of tempera paints are part of the reason these paints are so popular in children’s art classes. The colors are also easy to mix to create new shades. Tempera paint is often used to teach color mixing to children.
  • Tempera paints are inexpensive. They’re some of the most affordable paints you can buy. This makes them perfect for art classes, children’s projects, and large projects where you might be using larger quantities of paint.

Even though tempera paints are wonderful for many projects, there are a few disadvantages to using this type of paint:

  • Tempera paint isn’t as durable as acrylic paint. Because tempera is primarily water-based, it will run or wash away if it comes in contact with any moisture. This makes it completely unsuitable for anything that will be displayed outdoors, or in a humid environment. Tempura can be sealed (spray sealant works best), which will offer some protection, but even sealants could degrade over time. Tempura paint also has a tendency to crack or flake over time, especially if the paint was applied too thick.
  • Tempera paint isn’t completely lightfast. Over time, the colors of most tempera paint will start to fade. There are a few brands of tempera paint that advertise as being resistant to fading. Also, you can prevent some fading if your painted project has been covered with a clear sealant.
  • Tempera paint doesn’t work well on some surfaces. It soaks into canvas and fabric. Tempera paint can be used on wood, but some sanding and perhaps a primer coat will probably be needed. Tempera won’t adhere at all to some plastics or to metal.
  • Tempera paint has a very short shelf life. Acrylic paint can last 10 to 15 years, but typically tempera paint will only last 2-3 years. If you buy your paint in small quantities, this might not be an issue. But if you buy larger quantities, which is usually a cheaper option, you’ll need to use all your paint within a couple of years. To tell if your liquid tempera paint has gone “off”, it will either be drying up in the container, or it will smell bad.

Price Difference between Tempera Paint and Acrylic Paint

One of the biggest differences between tempera and acrylic paint is the price. Although you will find different brands of paint have slightly different prices, tempera paint will always be the more affordable choice.

On average, tempera paint will cost $0.1 dollars per fluid ounce, while acrylic paint is at approximately $1.2 dollars for the same amount of paint.

Both tempera and acrylic paints can also be purchased in sets, but the acrylic paints will still be more expensive. Keep in mind that even though tempera is cheaper, it has a much shorter shelf life than acrylic paint.

Tempera vs. Acrylic: Which Is Right For You?

Hopefully, this outlined some of the major differences between tempera and acrylic paints, and you will be able to make a decision as to which paint is the best for your needs.

Both of these paints have their pros and cons, but they are also both good options, depending on the nature of your project.

If you’re looking for a good paint for children to use or one for temporary decoration, then tempera is your best bet. If you want more durable paint to use on outdoor projects, or to paint something that you want to last a long time, then acrylic is your best choice.

Tempera Paint on Wood – Can You Use it? A Quick Guide

47 · Aug 18, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Tempera paint is an inexpensive, non-toxic paint that can be used for many fun creative projects. It’s a great paint for children to use, as it is safe and easy to clean up.

Tempera can be used to paint a variety of wood craft projects. However, since tempera paint is water-based, you’ll need to prepare the unfinished wood and seal your final painted projects.

What Is Tempera Paint?

If you or your children have ever painted in school art classes, or if you or your children have ever played with finger paints, then you’ve probably used tempera paint.

Tempera is a water-based, non-toxic, allergen-free paint that is popular for craft projects and children’s art classes. You can find it in craft stores, art supply stores, and even toy stores. Sometimes you’ll find it labeled as “poster paint”.

It is known for having bright colors that don’t fade and it is very easy to clean up. Because it is water-based, it can be used like watercolor paint or just painted in solid hues.

You can also buy tempera paint in the form of powdered pigment, and paint sticks. The powdered pigments can be mixed with water to create a liquid tempera paint.

The tempera paint sticks resemble glue sticks and are used to draw or write on any surface instead of using a paintbrush.

There is also another type of paint known as egg tempera paint.

This isn’t the same as the tempera paint that is commonly found in stores. Egg tempera is used only by professional fine artists. It is created with artist-grade pigments with egg yolk acting as a binder.

Can You Use Tempera Paint on Wood?

Yes. You can use tempera paint on wood. However, there are a few things you need to know about it. I’ll show you how to use tempera paint on wood in the rest of this post.

How To Paint Wood With Tempera Paint

Tempera paint is easy to use on any surface. It applies smoothly, and the colors stay bright with very little fading. It dries to a nice matte finish.

However, if you want to paint anything made of wood with tempera paint there are a few things that you will want to consider.

First, keep in mind that tempera paint is water-based. This means that it will wash away, partially or completely, if it gets wet. For this reason, you shouldn’t use tempera paint on any wood surface that will be displayed outside, or that will be frequently touched.

You can apply a sealant, but even that will offer limited protection.

Another thing to be mindful of is that tempera paint isn’t as strong as other types of paint, such as acrylic paint. Tempera paint will crack or flake after drying if it is applied too thickly or if the painted surface is very flexible.

If you’ve decided to use tempera paint on wood, here are a few basic steps that will help you get the best possible results:

  • Tempera will work best on clean, unfinished, smooth wood. If the wood you want to paint is a little rough, usually a light sanding can be done quickly and easily. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth, but any noticeable rough or splintery areas should be sanded out. Tempera paint is very liquid, and it won’t apply evenly to rough surfaces.

If the wood surface has any kind of varnish or sealant on it, the tempera paint won’t stick to it. Varnishes, shellacs, and sealants are all made to repel moisture. Since tempera paint is water-based, it won’t adhere to those surfaces.

  • If you want to paint your wooden piece a solid color or have a background color, you might want to use a light primer coat first. Gesso is an inexpensive primer product that is used to treat canvases, wood, and paper before painting. You could also apply a very light wash of acrylic paint as a primer.

Because tempera is water-based, it can soak into unfinished wood and might look a little bit blotchy when it dries. Sometimes a second coat of paint will make it look more even, but a primer coat is the best choice.

  • Now for the fun part! Once your wood is sanded and primed (if using primer), it’s time to paint! Tempera applies very smoothly with any type of paintbrush. It will look best if you don’t apply a very thick coat of paint. If the paint is too thick, it might crack or flake once it is dry.

Tempera paint dries very quickly. The colors typically don’t change once the paint is dry. If you’re careful not to apply the paint too thick, it’s easy to layer colors on top of each other.

It’s also very easy to mix tempera paint to create new colors. Because tempera colors are very vibrant, they combine easily and the new color is unlikely to turn out “muddy” or dull.

  • If you want a watercolor appearance, it’s easy to achieve with tempera paint! Like traditional watercolor paint, tempera can be thinned with water to get a more washed-out or transparent look. Layering transparent washes of color can add a lot of depth to any painted piece.

  • After your tempera paint has dried, you might notice a few spots on the wood where the paint has soaked in more than the surrounding area. You can fix this easily enough just by painting a thin coat over any place that needs a little more coverage.
  • The final step you might want to take for your tempera-painted wood piece is to seal it. This will protect your painted surface from moisture or humidity, and keep the paint looking clean and bright.

  • Cleaning up is easy when using tempera paint! You can use soap and water to clean your paint brushes and any other areas. Tempera paint should wash out of clothes easily, although it might leave a stain if the paint dries on clothing.

What Wood Pieces Can I Paint With Tempera Paint?

There are only a few limitations when it comes to what wood pieces can be painted with tempera paint.

Technically, any unfinished wood can be painted with tempera. However, tempera is not the best choice for anything that will be permanently displayed outside. I wrote another post about the best paint for furniture that goes into more detail.

It’s also not a good paint choice for furniture, interior wood trim, or anything that will be handled or touched frequently.

You can find all sorts of unfinished wood “blanks” at craft and hobby stores that are great for tempera paints. Some great ideas for using tempera paint on wood are:

  • Wood signs that can be used to decorate your home. You can find all kinds of shapes and sizes at hobby stores.
  • Small wooden boxes can be painted to hold special trinkets or jewelry.
  • Wooden picture frames that are painted in bright colors are a fun way to display favorite family photos or vacation memories. You can find unfinished frames in craft stores, but even old frames can work. Check out thrift stores and yard sales for inexpensive frames. If the frames already have a coat of paint or finish on them, it can be sanded off then a light primer coat can be applied before using your tempera paints. Painted frames also make great personalized gifts, especially when paired with keepsakes like custom award medals to celebrate sports wins, school milestones, or memorable family moments.
  • Most hobby and craft supply stores sell wood holiday ornaments that you can paint. This is an especially fun activity to do with kids! Be sure to write the date and your child’s name on the back of the ornament to create a memorable keepsake.

Will Tempera Paint Sticks Work On Wood?

Tempera paint sticks are solid forms of tempera paint that you can draw or color with. They resemble glue sticks or markers.

These paint sticks are perfect for small children who might have trouble using paintbrushes. They’re also a bit less messy for children to use than painting with brushes and water.

Tempera paint sticks will work on wood, but the coverage might not be as smooth as using a brush to apply the paint. The more smooth your wood surface is, the better the paint stick will adhere.

After the color from the paint stick has fully dried, you can seal it (if you prefer) just as you would any other form of tempera paint.

Sealing Tempera Paint On Wood Pieces

Since tempera paint is water-based, you will need to seal it to protect it. If you don’t seal your painted wooden project, any contact with water or humidity can cause the paint to smear or come off, even after it has been dry for a long time.

There are several options to seal your project. Commonly, sealants for painted projects come in two forms: liquid sealant that you can apply with a paintbrush, or spray sealant.

Both types of sealant are available in a variety of finishes, from ultra-glossy to completely matte.

Liquid sealants, such as Liquitex brand, provide great protection for any painted work as well as a good moisture barrier.

The key to getting the best appearance and protection from any liquid sealant is to apply it in one or two very thin coats. Be aware that some liquid sealants might cause your tempera paint to look a little bit darker, or even smear it when applying.

Spray sealants, such as Krylon brand, are an excellent choice. They are easy to apply, but you should work outside or in a well-ventilated area while spraying. The spray shouldn’t cause your tempera paint to run or become discolored.

Mod-Podge is inexpensive and most crafters already have it in their supplies. It can be used to seal tempera paint on wood, but it’s not the best choice for anything that will be displayed outdoors.

Mod-Podge doesn’t always hold up to the elements, such as temperature changes and heavy moisture, and might turn slightly yellow-ish over time.

Is Tempera Paint Permanent On Wood?

Tempera paint isn’t quite as durable as acrylic or oil paints, but with proper care, it can be made to last for years. The key to making tempera paint long-lasting on wood is, of course, using a sealant.

If your painted project is sealed and displayed indoors, it should last for a very long time

Chalk Paint On Metal – Everything You Need To Know

71 · May 18, 2023 · Leave a Comment

Did you know you can use chalk paint on metal surfaces? It’s true! Not only is chalk paint easy to use on anything made of metal, but it’s a fun way to bring new life to patio furniture, plant stands, shelves, and office furniture.

Let’s explore some tips and ideas for painting metal objects with chalk paint.

Does Chalk Paint Work On Metal?

Yes. Chalk paint works beautifully on metal. In fact, there aren’t many surfaces where chalk paint won’t work. It takes a little bit of prep of course, but not nearly as much as painting wood furniture with chalk paint. It’s key to make sure you use the best quality chalk paint to avoid chipping.

What are some of the metal objects that look great painted with chalk paint? Here’s a short list:

  • You can use chalk paint to transform metal plant stands to bring some color to a garden or patio.

  • Plain metal shelving is usually inexpensive, but not particularly attractive. Paint it with a bright chalk paint shade to transform it into something eye-catching!

  • Search yard sales and thrift stores for old metal office furniture. Once upon a time, metal desks and file cabinets were the norm in many offices. Now they’re showing up in thrift stores for reasonable prices. The problem with these nondescript pieces of furniture is that they’re usually found in shades of dull gray or “putty” (should that truly be considered a color?).  Chalk paint in fun colors can make boring metal furniture seem like something modern and trendy!
  • Upcycle metal cans and containers! You can use chalk paint to decorate clean, empty cans and containers. Painting cans in fun colors is an easy project, and the painted cans are great for organizing craft supplies, pens, or kitchen utensils. This is the perfect project to use up smaller amounts of “leftover” chalk paint from big projects. Painting empty cans is also fun for kids to help with!
  • Add a pop of color to your home decor by chalk-painting metal accents such as curtain rods, cabinet handles, and drawer pulls.
  • Last but certainly not least, chalk paint is great for painting metal outdoor furniture. Patio tables and chairs can look brand new with a couple coats of chalk paint, and maybe some updated cushions.

How Do You Prepare Metal For Chalk Paint?

Preparing metal objects to be painted with chalk paint is very easy. In fact, it takes less prep work than chalk painting wood furniture. First and foremost you want to make sure whatever you’re going to paint is clean. This should be simple to do with just some soap and water.

The next thing you want to do is look over the piece you are about to paint for chipping paint or rust. If there are significant areas where old paint is chipping, you should go ahead and chip/scrape off as much as you can.

It should come off easily enough using a putty knife, coarse sandpaper, or a bit of steel wool.  If there is rust, you should remove any loose pieces the same way.

You can paint right over any chalk paint, or any rust spots, or apply a clear sealant over them if you want to leave the rust showing. A little bit of rust can add character to whatever you’re painting, especially if you are a fan of the distressed aesthetic.

Metal is non-porous, so the paint will sit right on top of it instead of being absorbed into the piece. You don’t have to apply a primer coat, but the first coat of paint should be applied very thinly.

This will act as a base coat. It will look streaky and maybe a little uneven, but it will be okay. By the second or third coat of chalk paint, it will have that beautifully smooth appearance that chalk style paints are known for.

Can I Use Chalk Paint On Metal Outdoor Furniture?

Yes. You can use chalk paint on metal outdoor furniture. Chalk paint is a fabulous way to give new life to metal outdoor furniture!

It’s fairly easy to do, and the results are so satisfying. Here is a quick rundown of the steps for chalk painting outdoor metal furniture:

  • First, you want to remove any furniture cushions and tape off anything that you don’t want to paint (glass or tile tabletop, for example).  If you’re completely changing the color scheme of your outdoor space, getting new cushions to match your new paint job will make it seem like you have brand new furniture.
  • It’s cleaning time! Use soapy water to clean the furniture, then wipe it dry with a lint-free cloth. Remove any big pieces of chipping paint and loose rust. If you want any of the rust to show, now is the time to cover it with a clear coat. It’s not necessary to clear coat the entire piece of furniture; you can just apply enough to cover the rusty areas.

You can use a chalk paint brush-on polycrylic sealant, or a spray clear coat over any rusty spots. Whatever clear coat sealant you choose, look for one with a matte finish. A smooth matte finish will blend in the best with the chalk paint. Allow the clear coat to completely dry before you begin painting.

Of course, if you don’t want any of the rust to show, you can simply clean away any loose rusty bits and then paint your chalk paint right over the top of it.
  • It’s time to start painting! You can either apply the chalk paint with a brush or spray it on. The key thing to keep in mind is that multiple thin coats of paint are going to give you the best results. Apply the first coat of chalk paint thinly, and keep in mind that this is the base coat. It’s going to look uneven and streaky and to be honest, not that great. It’s okay, though! This first coat of paint is just the base for the next layers of paint to “grab” onto. Each subsequent coat of chalk paint will look better than the one before it!

Be sure to let each layer of paint fully dry before applying the next coat. Since you’re applying nice thin coats of paint, you will probably want three or maybe even four layers before you’re finished.
  • If you want, the next (optional) step is to add “distressed” areas to your metal furniture. It should be just as easy as distressing wood furniture. It’s as simple as taking some medium sandpaper and gently sanding areas where you want the metal to show through. This looks especially nice on areas with texture or along edges.
  • The last step (if you’re not applying a sealant coat)  is to peel off any painter’s tape, replace any furniture cushions, and begin enjoying your gorgeous “new” outdoor furniture.

Do You Have To Seal Chalk Paint On Metal?

No, you don’t have to seal chalk paint on metal. It turns out much better if you do seal it though.

There is a lot of disagreement over whether or not you really need to seal chalk paint on metal; especially when it pertains to metal outdoor furniture. A good number of websites will state that sealing isn’t necessary.

My thoughts on this are that it is better to seal the chalk paint than to not do so. Keep in mind that chalk paint is water soluble.

If your painted metal furniture will be outdoors where it will be directly exposed to the elements (especially rain and humidity), eventually that exposure will start to wear at your paint job.

This is especially true if you’ve distressed any areas of your furniture. Visible wear and tear won’t happen quickly, but you might find yourself wanting to touch up the paint after just a year or so.

Both Krylon and Rust-Oleum produce spray-on clear coats with a smooth matte finish. They’re perfect for protecting chalk-painted furniture. Spray the sealant in one or two light coats after the chalk paint is completely dry. Allow the clear coats to completely dry before spraying the next layer, of course.

Does Annie Sloan Chalk Paint Work On Metal?

Annie Sloan chalk paint is the original chalk paint, and it works wonderfully on metal surfaces! It applies easily, and can either be brushed on or used in a paint sprayer. Annie Sloan’s color selections work perfectly with most decorating schemes, too.

There is a video tutorial on Annie Sloan’s website that shows how to paint a metal room radiator with chalk paint. What a great idea!

Can I Use Rust-oleum Chalk Paint On Metal?

Rust-Oleum brand “Chalked” paint is a great choice for painting metal, especially outdoor metal furniture. It is available in either cans of paint that can be applied with a brush, or an easy-to-use spray paint.

There are several color choices available with either type of these paints, and they will both dry to a beautiful chalky matte finish.

Rust-Oleum is a trusted brand that is known for being durable as well as attractive.

Can I Use Krylon Chalk Paint On Metal?

Krylon is another brand of paint known for durability and quality. Their Chalky Finish spray paint is another outstanding option for painting metal furniture. It’s made to stand up to the elements and is available in a wide variety of eye-catching colors.

Some online reviewers have noted that this paint dries to more of a satin finish than a true chalky matte finish. The sheen of a satin finish is very subtle, so anything you paint with this paint will still have a smooth, non-glossy appearance.

I hope this has inspired you to try chalk paint on metal furniture or other objects around your home. It’s a fun and easy way to bring some unique style into your home!
